New FTTP connection problems with my own Netgear RS200 router

Hi - this is driving me mad

Had PN FTTP installed recently and worked straight away with the Plusnet Hub 2 router

Am trying to switch router to my, i think better Netgear rs200 router

Have configured using PPPOE via the Netgear interface and have rebooted openreach ONT and router

I am getting a single red connection led not a soilid white led on Router and no internet - i am wired over ethernet

from my imac to the router. The network settings on my Mac are saying ethernet connected and wifi on. Wifi will recognise name of wifi but no internet connection. I get 'site cant be reached DNS address could not be found message'.

I am wondering whether i need to use VLAN settings on the router (currently off)

Does anyone have any experience of this set and advice

Have you set the username & password correctly for PPPoE ?

The username and password are the ones used to access the Plusnet member centre https://www.plus.net/member-centre/login

The only difference is that the PPPoE username is suffixed with @plusdsl.net

So for example , if your username is fred , the pppoe username is fred@plusdsl.net.

We’ve recently moved from FTTC to FTTP. By removing the vlan my aged Netgear D6400 now has a new lease of life….

Note : the router needed a power down & up as the software reboot didn’t work.

Thanks all for you responses. Looks like my VlAN theory is a no go

I currently have VLAN to off and still not working. I log in with my normal plusnet username and add @plusdsl.net so i dont think its that (though i will double check. I have restarted computer aas well as both router and Ont box. Normal user name gets me into here ok. I assume there is not a different username/password for FTTP broadband.

The reason i thought this might be an issue was down to the Chat GPT bot who seemed to have a strong view on the issue (see below)

Plusnet FTTP and VLAN 101

Most FTTP connections require VLAN ID 101 for the PPPoE connection to work.
Some older advice or generic instructions skip it, but with the Netgear RS200, you must enable VLAN 101 if the Internet LED stays amber and PPPoE doesn’t connect.
Without VLAN tagging, the RS200 sends PPPoE untagged, which Plusnet’s network ignores, so it cannot authenticate → amber LED.

✅ Evidence from Plusnet:

“FTTP customers must set VLAN 101 on the WAN interface for PPPoE to work.”

Normally i would accept the advice of members on here. Has anyone else had experience of Chatbots giving out technical info. Would this be similar if i phoned in to technical support?

@jonnyfriendly I can categorically say that you DONT set a VLAN ID on Plusnet FTTP.

I use my own router running Openwrt on a Plusnet 900Mb FTTP connection. My WAN connection is set for PPPoE with username & password as I defined above. VLAN is disabled

Does your RS200 have any log that might indicate why its not connecting ?

The Openreach ONT provides the VLAN 101 setting, you would only need this setting if your are using a third party modem for VDSL/FTTC

Silly question time, you have the RS200 orange WAN port connected directly to the ONT?

As with @MisterW no VLAN set on my TP-Link router.

@jonnyfriendly Never rely on AI information, you do not need a VLAN ID for Plusnet FTTP, the underlying Openreach connection does use VLAN ID 101 but the ONT deals with it.

Just checking what you mean by "my normal user name gets me here" your Forum username should not be the same as your account username which you use to login to the member centre. Your FTTP connection needs accountusername@plusdsl.net

along with your account password.

Thanks guys

Eventually worked - rebooted both router and openreach box and left them for a bit

Then used Safari not Chrome to check and save settings - then worked

Not sure what i have done but working. without any Vlan settings

One note AI via chatgpt was well off and misleading tried to sound authoritative but not

Gemini on same question gave a different but correct answer in that no need to use Vlan settings

So its either here or Gemini for me going forward

Gemini is just as likely to be wrong on your next question. Problem with AI is it makes stuff up based on mixed info from all over the net. The only way to use it successfully for technical info is to ask it for links to its sources, and check them yourself. Then you know if is relevant to your case (IE, are the sources specific to your plus net situation)

Whilst AI might be ok for doing things like "creating a weather summary for <place>", it tells blatant lies so often. For example, I ask Google search for "a four letter word that means xxxx". The AI then replies "here's a four letter word that means xxxx:" then proceeds to give me a 3 or 5 letter word!!!

It's the sort of reply I'd expect if I asked a 7 year old....
