The Plusnet Hub Two is BT Smart Hub 2 in a white case, however the Hub two is missing a couple of features, Digital Voice and Wifi discs extender support.

The unnamed wifi signals are a leftover from the BT version to support the connections to the wifi extenders, it is not possible to disable the redundant signals

Plusnet Hub Two Wifi signal - general query

Hi - looking at the signal strength on my Hub-2 for both 2.4gHz & 5gHz signals using Wifi Analyser (by Farproc - excellent app but sadly no longer available on Playstore 😟) I can see 2 signals per frequency. The overall signal stays constant for one of the displayed values (blue), but the other (pink) seems to come and go

This isn't causing me any connection problems, but I would be interested to know what's happening. Any experts out there got any thoughts?👍

For instance these images show the 2.4gHz signal -

the first shows 2 graphs Pink & Blue at roughly the same strength

the second shows the blue graph constant, but at that instant the pink one was "disappearing" from the display

the third shows the signals over time so you can see the signals are pretty much identical, but the pink drops out then returns briefly then drops again

I'm 'missing' something here ?

@geoffers

What SSID are you using to connect to your WiFi - "PlusNet1" or "VMCJ" ?

If it's "VMCJ", then it's good that it's on an unused channel, but why is it more than 30dBm lower power than "PlusNet1" at the same distance ?. Just looking at the power levels I'd assume that "VMCJ" belongs to a neighbour, or other distant hotspot ?

If you're using "PlusNet1", what happens if you change wireless channel to "1", does the other "Plusnet1" stay on channel "6" ?.

Having each of the "Plusnet1" SSIDs on different wireless channels, would be better than sharing the same (if that's possible)

.

My thinking is the VMCJ network was not in the same property so I ignored it seeing the question is about the varying signal strength for the noname wireless signal.

@geoffers

The Hub two also has the same redundant signal for the 5GHz signal

Additional question (from the uninformed) !

If the pink signal is noname, then what is the red "Plusnet1" (if it isn't pink) in the bottom picture ?

Is the bottom picture showing signal strength for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands at the same time ? - which I doubt as I've just opened my up to date "WiFi Analyzer" app, and the signal strength graph only shows one band at a time.

Just to answer the various qn's
Yes it's Plusnet1 (I renamed the default SSID as I had other APs in the house as well) - neighbour is the VMCZ

The dual signals per freq stay with the assigned channel

Same is happening on the 5gHz

The red plusnet1 in the bottom pic refers to the 5gHz AP & the light blue is the 2.4gHz (the pink seems to piggyback with the blue)

BTW: It's not causing me any problems, but I'm just interested to know what I'm seeing
Thanks for your interest 👍

Hopefully I have answered your question, it is not unusual for the backhaul wireless signal used for wifi extenders to share the same channel, keeps the price down.
