Currently upgrading to CTTC Fibre and just installed new Hub Two router. Able to connect phones and tablets without issues. When I attempt to connect my Humax FVP 5000T it fails every time. Previously used a Hub One router and connection was not an issue.
Is anyone aware of any issues with this Humax set top box? Is there a compatibility problem?

Thanks for your help.

Doing a quick Google search returns a lot of WiFi issues with that device. One mentions encryption standards. I believe that the Hub Two has higher (more recent) standards (WAP2) than the Hub One. Therefore you might find find changing the security type in the router's advanced WiFi configuration from WAP2 to WAP-Auto helpful.

<LI-CODE lang="markup">This mode allows you to tune your wireless features to give you the best performance with all your wireless devices.
Your Plusnet Hub is automatically set to Mode 1

Mode 1: Gives you the fullest featured wireless, maximising throughput and range.

Mode 2: Some devices can sometimes struggle to use the latest Wireless features, if you have any devices that can't get a good wireless connection, try using this mode. Selecting this mode may reduce the wireless range and throughput but improve connectivity.

Mode 3: Change to this mode if your wireless devices don't perform well using mode 1 or 2. Selecting this mode will reduce the latest features as well as wireless range and throughput compared to Mode 1 and 2. This will allow for the broadest range of devices to operate on the wireless.
The features that are reduced include: power saving procedures, traffic aggregation methods and Multiple Concurrent data streams.</LI-CODE>

Hub Two modes, hopefully 2 is the answer

My earlier screen shot was 2.4GHz

The connection fails after entering the router password. I’ve tried it three times And get the same response. It’s a painful process as the password is very lengthy especially having to enter it via the Humax remote and navigating an on screen keyboard.

i have an idea that it might be down to the fact there are two frequencies available in the new router: 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz and that the router is trying to connect at 5Ghz. I’ve read somewhere that devices need to be closer to the router when 5Ghz is used. Looks like I need to investigate whether I can force a connection at 2.4Ghz.

I’m not familiar with WPA-Auto. Wouldn’t that reduce the level of security. I’m pretty sure the previous router ran with WPA2 and the Humax connected with no issues.

You can try switching off the 5GHz band, but it’s not the router trying to make the connection, it’s the device.

I have seen devices connect successfully to a routers wifi signal but not get an IP address allocated. (wires hack tracing discloses all of the WiFi traffic.)

They were only partly connected. Exactly what happens in your scenario? Have you tried using the WPS button to make the connection if the device supports such? Is the password accepted, but no functional connection is established? Does the device appear in the router’s connected device list?

Have you tried changing the mode setting in the router?

The Humax FVP 5000T is not that new, it is possible it does not support 5GHz signals, I suggest trying Mode 2.

The setting is found on the Hub two >Advanced Settings >Wireless >Wireless mode >make Mode 2

EDIT:

WPA-Auto: This setting means the router will automatically choose the most appropriate WPA version (WPA2 or the older WPA) for each device connecting to the network. This ensures compatibility with older devices that might not support WPA2, but it could potentially slightly lower the overall security of your network.

Not sure how old your Humax is but WiFi security constantly evolves.

I have a WiFi printer, made by HP, that IIRC connected happily to my PlusNet hub One, but it just won't connect to Hub Two.

As it happens I have a WiFi access point that uses an older security version and it will connect happily to that, though my modern iPhones complain about that part of my home network, but do connect.

So I suspect your issue is to do with WiFi security and "playing" with the options available in yiour router will hopefully find a happy medium.

PS I also saw something online about key lengths, these can be quite long (64 characters?) but the Humax has a lower limit, maybe 32 characters. Red herring or relevant?

After a few Google searches I found a WiFi specification…

The FVP-5000T uses Wi-Fi b/g/n (20/40MHz) and Wi-Fi a, n(20/40MHz), ac(20/40/80MHz)

That suggests it should work on either band.

Many thanks for all the feedback and advice you’ve all provided on this issue. I have to say I’ve been very impressed with speed of response and the quality of information given.
Taking into account everyone’s suggestions I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not worth pursuing this any further. The Humax is currently being used largely as a recording facility and a digital interface to an old Panasonic TV that has excellent picture quality. I can forego its internet connectivity and rely instead on a Google ChromeCast device for all streaming content.

Thanks again for all you help.

As a salve to the situation, you could consider configuring the HUB One as WAP and connect the Humax to that by WiFi.

or using powerline adaptors to facilitate a wired connection without having an ethernet cable between rooms.
