I have just upgraded from virgin 500mb to plusnet 900mb. I was with virgin for years but at renewal they wouldn't meet the market price so i thought ok time for a change. I paid less and was expecting an upgrade in speed. However it seems in reality I have a worse connection on my PC and MacBook Pro 2017 is barely connected at all now.

With virgin I always had 350mb now i can't get above 200mb. Is this norma for Plusnet 900Mb? Customer Service juts say they only guarantee 100mb which I really did not see in he small print and there is no cooling off period it seems so i am now stuck for 2 years like this.

The macbook is connected over wifi which Plusnet or any provider always says is a problem...however previously i had 150mb with virgin and the router didn't move although it has changed. But this is a new Plusnet router so i assume it should be able to handle this job. I live in a fairly small house. The router is only in the next room from the macbook pro.

The download is 5-20Mb, with upload 5-60Mb. It seems to fluctuate and werldy the upload is faster than the download many times when i test the speed.

Ipad and phone test in the same location as the macbook show 180Mb.

Any ideas on what the issue is?

Wondering whether I need to buy a new router, new macbook, change some config or buy new hair as most of mine is now pulled out!

Thanks for any ideas...:)

Benchmark speed tests should always be done over Ethernet connections, there can never be any assurances about WiFi speeds as they are very much impacted by environmental considerations such as building fabric and other local WiFi services.

People can get obsessed with speed of individual devices whilst there’s no discernible real impact on the use of the internet. Can you be certain that there’s no concurrent activity whilst running the speed tests?

What router were you using with VM? The Plusnet Hub 2 is an adequate basic router; it does not have WiFi 6 (or 7) screen on some premium priced devices … which though possibly positioned as being “free” are paid for by the higher package price you mentioned.
