Why a high speed USB port? why not just connect the ONT to the server with ethernet?

Does anybody know if there is an adapter that will connect the Openreach box on the wall to a High speed USB port on a server, thus making it possible to use a (linux) machine as a router?

There is no technical reason this can't but done, but what adapter is needed? There are lots of web pages on doing the software side so I assume the linux side and login to plusnet is not hard for a techie to do. Obviously, plusnet will not support this and testing a perceived BB fault would mean plugging the router back in etc., but it would save me 18w 365/24 which is worth doing.
