A couple of weeks ago we switched from a copper line to full fibre 300. Of the 5 devices - two phones, two tablets, one PC, connected to the router, only one of the tablets comes anywhere near the quoted speeds, with results of between 3 and 30m download (but a higher upload) on all the others.

Have spent a few hours on the phone with different PN helpline staff and had a second visit from a BT engineer (the signal was fine on their phone), but none can find out what the issue is. PN told me today that their speeds are only guaranteed on wired connections anyway.

As the tablet that’s fine is the newest device (around a year old), I purchased a new phone today and tried that. The results were very good, so although the other devices are only 2-3 years ago, I came to the conclusion that I need to change all our devices. But then I discovered that the signal drops right off on the new phone (and tablet) in the main room of the house.

Do you think a higher spec router might help, or boosters maybe?

Any help or suggestions would greatly appreciated.

Hi Zoli,

There are two WiFi band supported by the HUB and many client devices.

2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

2.4 GHz can have a better range but is slower than 5 GHz.

5 GHz is typically faster but cannot penetrate through objects like stud walls as well as 2.4 GHz.

In densely populated areas the 2.4 GHz WiFi band can be overcrowded with neighbours WiFi interfering.

Maybe some of your slower devices are connecting to the 2.4 GHz WiFi and the faster devices to 5GHz?

In my experience not every device needs the fastest WiFi speeds and will function acceptably even if the WiFi speeds are limited compared to other devices.

If the device works why replaced it?

Regards

Richard

I was asking about your old router just is case it could be used to test your WiFi. I'm presuming you didn't have any problems with it (unless your starting speed was so slow you didn't notice).

As mentioned, it is best to run a wired speed test to check the incoming connection. If you are receiving what you expect then it clarifies it's a WiFi problem - probably with your equipment. Then it just becomes a case of working out what it is.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply and information.

Switching between 2.4 and 5 on my PC didn’t make any difference.

You make a good point about not every device needing a fast speed. I suppose you tend to be seduced by the thought of 300, with a minimum of 140!

Hi Ian,

I can’t remember exactly, but my old router was between 5-8 years old. I averaged 35-50 with that on my PC, compared to 8 to 20 I’m getting now.

Running a wired test gave results of around 300.

@Zoli As you are getting the full dpeed over an Ethernet connection, the proble is obviously a WiFi one, but if the 'problem' devices are reasonably close to the Hub, as they will be in your home, AND this is with both the Hubs, the issue is with the devices, not the Hub.
