Hub 2 - USB maximum current?

Hi,

I'm hoping to use the USB port at the back of my Hub 2 router as the power source for a VOIP adapter since I'm running out of mains sockets. Please does anyone know the maximum current that can be drawn from it?

Unless someone knows better, assume that it's 500mA.

USB 2.0 - 5V - 500mA

@timdorrington what VOIP device are you planning to use?

I was thinking similarly but the wall-wart (PSU) for my Gigastream N300ip is 6.4v so I didn't bother.

On the other hand my Gigastream handsets only need 4v and charge fine when I use USB power to feed the cradle.

An alternative solution, one I now use a lot, is to replace the mains socket with one that includes USB power outlets, or one with more sockets (though they do normally protrude further from the wall).

Also, just to add that the Gigastream N300ip uses a rare power connector size of 5.5mm external but 3.0mm internal (usually 2.1 or 2.5) and I wasn't prepared to sacrifice the mains charger to cut and splice for a USB-powered test.

May be of interest, I have a broadly similar Gigaset N510 IP PRO (spotted at a low price on eBay) which can be powered by PoE. However, the main difference between it and the N300 IP is that it is purely VoIP as it doesn't have a physical landline socket.

@RobPN As it happens I have an N510 as well, I just haven't installed it yet, the N300 is still connected to my (separate) old POTS landline which weirdly still has dial tone and an assigned number though can neither make or receive calls now.

When I do get round to installing the N510 the N300 will be kept as backup.

Likewise, I'm still using the N300 IP because I still have my BT landline connected to it.

I tested the N510 briefly using PoE when I received it, then put it back in its box for probable future use.

I'm going with Phonely's VOIP service and will be using their adapter, which is a Fanvil GA11 - both its USB and power adapter ports are marked as 5V DC.

Thanks for all your replies - looks like I won't be able to use the USB port on the Hub 2 for powering the VOIP adapter because that's rated at 1A. Thought it was worth asking though 🙂

@timdorrington It's certainly worth testing the Hub2 USB power supply with your Fanvil GA11. 👍

I just knocked together a USB lead for my spare Gigastream N300ip (nominally 6.4v) and tried it using a "meaty" USB wall-wart, it worked happily on the 5V or so that supplied so I thought, why not and powered it from the Hub2 instead.

All seemed to work fine and I made a test call using it. @RobPN please note. Didn't leave it connected for more than a few minutes though, we're expecting some important calls later today and I want to be sure our "landline" is working.

When I'm ready to switch to my Gigastream N510 I'll "soak test2 that to see if I can simplify my power socket setup. I do also have a free USB power outlet in a nearby mains outlet, so I have options.

Just to note that I've started my migration from N300ip to N510ipPRO.

Currently the N510 is running via USB from an old basic Apple power supply - 5V/5W and it's working fine. Next step is to try it using the Hub2 and see if both stay stable.

The PSUs for the N300 and N510 are only 6.4V/600mA/3.9W so there's not a huge discrepancy anyway. I'm optimistic. 😎

In due course I'll be selling off my spare N300ip, on eBay if I can't find a better way........ 🤔
