Ethernet cable is always best . As you have one it place you can use it for a WiFi access point. It may be possible to provision an old router for this purpose.

Our router (Plusnet Hub 2) is downstairs and we're getting poor WiFi strength in the bedroom. The bedroom is close to the router (roughly 10m) but the signal obviously has to travel through the floor and a solid brick wall.

I have done some research but am unsure whether I need a booster or an extender or maybe neither as I've heard that their performance isn't great.

I also have an ethernet cable running to the upstairs room next to the bedroom, so have heard I could use an secondary router as an access point?
