So I noticed that my connection has been dropping out again, I noticed because the battery on my ring video doorbell has been draining even though it's hard wired in so constantly charging and the connection dropping and re connecting is depleting the battery.

I checked my router log and saw that for no apparent reason it has been dropping out again - last time I experienced this, plusnet had an engineer come out and find that the phone line to my house was damaged so it was replaced but the problem has returned - for how long I don't know in honesty!

Is the phone line working now? Is it quiet when you dial 17070 option 2?

Have you reported a fault?

I just tried to raise a fault but could only find that I could text to do so. Problem is that the reply I get it "there is no account bt that number" even though that is my number and I can see this on my home phone control panel within my manage account page on the website

Thanks for your post @akeegan90

I'm sorry to see you're having connection issues.

I've tested your line and the tests aren't showing any drops in the last 2 days:

I've attached below a graph of what I can see:

Could you post up a copy of those router logs so I can take a closer look?

I can though see your speed is artificially restricted by automated equipment at the cabinet (the green box in the road) to 22.4mbps, so I've arranged for your line to be reset, which should go through within 3 working days.

Also, the landline number showing in your home phone control panel was from your old property and we hadn't changed it. I've updated it for you so if you have a look again, you should see a new one there. This should mean you'll be able to text us to report a fault if needed now.

Hi Gandalf,

Thanks for your reply.

I will post router log when I get home.

What does artificially restricted mean and why would this be? - I've check constantly to see if any provider can offer me faster fibre or fttp but nothing is available to me, even though neighbours down the street can get fttp or even just ultra fast fibre which is disappointing to hear because I can't.

Thanks for getting back to me @akeegan90

No problem, I won't be in the office tonight and I'm back Tuesday, but one of my colleagues should be able to pick this back up with you in the meantime when you get back to us. Merry Christmas in advance.

There's a good guide Here on how the software at the cabinet works.

If you've not done already, it may be worth filling out the form Here on Openreach's website to ask when you'll get full fibre.

Let us know how it goes.

The Openreach does not say you will get 80Mbps, it says up to 80Mbps. It is just their way of saying which technology is available to your property.

From what I can see that says up to 80mbps but the actual speed you receive is based on how far you are from the cabinet (the green box in the road) and the quality of the line. If you fill out the form I've attached, this will go to Openreach's fibre enquiries team and they'll be able to check if there's plans to provide full fibre (FTTP).

Those logs show roughly the same amount of drops in your broadband connection to what we can see.

Is your doorbell plugged direct into your router using an ethernet cable? How often does it stop working, does it match up with the drops shown in the graph above?

Do you have any other devices you have issues with? If so are those wireless or do you have a laptop/computer you plug into the router using an ethernet cable?

No the doorbell is wireless but it doesn't have a log, just a reason for the battery draining is due to loss of connection that is all.

I have sky miniboxes which often need resetting (reconnecting to wifi/main box) due to disconnecting from the wifi after it has gone down too.

All my devices are wireless except a games console which in honesty hasn't been turned on for about 3 months.

Ah I see, we should probably be looking at this from a WiFi angle. I think when you mentioned it’s ‘hard wired’ in your first post, that threw me off a bit but not to worry.

Apologies - hard wired as in to the mains electric so I don't have to keep charging it.

All due respect but I'm not "new" to wifi/internet issues. I have a third party router as it gave me better wifi coverage than the plusnet one (I also had a modified plusnet one which was sent out to me last time I had connection issues), my router is up high in the centre of my house away from all other electronic devices, I have it set to auto select wifi channel including 12 and 13 and it uses both 2.4ghz and 5ghz, firmware is all up to date also.

I understand you may be pointing towards wifi but that alone doesn't explain the network dropping, that is an ISP/Line issue as even if my devices were connected via rj45 cable then they would still be disconnected due to the network loss.

Apologies if this sounds rude, it really wasn't meant to!

No problem, from the graph in the last 10 days your broadband has dropped mainly overnight and once Monday night with no drops in the last 2 days. Are you seeing your devices drop more times than this?

If that answer’s no, then it’s hard to mount an investigation, because unless our testing shows a fault, our suppliers consider an intermittent connection to be 3 drops within the last 24 hours or 6 drops within 72 hours.

If the answer’s yes though, I’d say that the additional drops are more closer to home as neither your router logs or our logs show drops outside of those times (not counting the drop you’ve had this afternoon showing in your router’s log after I posted the graph of your connection)

Do you have a laptop you can plug into the router using a cable you can check when your wireless device next drops out (and your router log doesn’t show a DSL or PPP drop)? That’ll help to get to the bottom of things.

The answer would have to be a no, I've not personally witnessed any drops. It wasn't until checking the dsl log and happened to notice a couple of drops over the weekend on there, my log only shows a few days so it's not extensive data just what I had seen and wondered if that was "normal" or if it was more persistent from what you could see your end that I wasn't able to see from my log.

Ah OK no problem, makes sense.

I’d keep an eye on things because your download speed is artificially restricted and that should be sorted over the next few days, perhaps into next week due to Christmas, as there’s normally an underlying issue behind that.
