Hi,

My contract with another provider is due to end and I'm potentially looking to join plusnet full fibre - but have a couple of questions that I hope you lovely people could advise. I hope I've got the correct forum, but if not, apologies (and please point me to the relevant forum if possible).

Existing setup is Virgin Media full fibre so I know that all goes in the bin. However the "old" unused phone line to the property was damaged/severed in the storms last year so there is not actual phone line into the property just now.

Q1) Can anyone advise on how this works for installation?
Q2) Although a new line/reconnect is required, where it physically enters the property is....poor... for my network. How easy is it for it to be moved and would Plusnet do that?
Q3) Internally every thing goes to out via my Unifi UDR7. Just now the virgin media hub is in "dumb modem mode" - is there an equivalent of this for the Plusnet modems so I avoid double-NATing?

Cheers,
Mike

@unca_mike welcome to the forums

Q1) Can anyone advise on how this works for installation?

Full fibre doesnt use the existing phone line

Q2) Although a new line/reconnect is required, where it physically enters the property is....poor... for my network. How easy is it for it to be moved and would Plusnet do that?

There is some leeway how the new fibre is routed ( see questions below )

Q3) Internally every thing goes to out via my Unifi UDR7. Just now the virgin media hub is in "dumb modem mode" - is there an equivalent of this for the Plusnet modems so I avoid double-NATing?Q1) Can anyone advise on how this works for installation?

Your UDR7 can connect directly to the ONT

what does the BT wholesale checker https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome say for your address ?

what is in the 'Install process' alongside the WBC FTTP availability ?

and what does the narrative below the availability matrix say ?

Thanks for the info - looking at the BT wholesale checker page:

- what is in the 'Install process' alongside the WBC FTTP availability ?

It says: "1 stage"

- and what does the narrative below the availability matrix say ?

It says:

"Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises:-Single Dwelling Unit Residential OH Feed with no anticipated issues.

FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered.

The exchange is not in a current fibre priority programme

As a WLR withdrawal exchange, product restrictions apply

SOADSL is not restricted at the exchange

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (VDSL or G.fast) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

For all SOADSL services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

Actual speeds experienced by end users and quoted by CPs will be lower due to a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communication Providers' networks and within customer premises.

In order to be eligible for handback, downstream speed should be less than Downstream Handback Threshold values.

If you decide to place an order for a WBC fibre product, an appointment may be required for an engineer to visit the end user's premises to supply the service

ADSL, ADSL2+ and SOADSL availability: If shown at FTTP or SOGEA premises,ADSL, ADSL2+ and SOADSL are not available to order due to WLR Withdrawal stop sell rules. CPs should order FTTP or SOGEA. Copper products are only available by exception."

So - if I'm understanding correctly, I just need to place an order, and get an engineer date? And if a new line is being fitted then hopefully the location should be negotiable. That's fantastic - thank you!

Cheers,

Mike

@unca_mike

The following shows what haapens with a FF install. The bit about two power sockets being required is not strictly accurate as the router is connected by ethernet cable so can go anywhere you're willing to run said cable.

https://www.openreach.com/help-and-support/full-fibre-broadband-installation-checklist

Assuming no poles were damaged then the install looks straight forward. A new fibre cable is run from the pole to your property. As already stated there is some leeway as to where both the external CSP box and the ONT go - you speak to the engineer on the day.

Going back to the UDR7. You will need to configure its WAN connection for PPPoE with your Plusnet username & password. Then connect its WAN port to the ONT that Openreach will install. Job done.

I would get the Plusnet router (for the postage charge) just in case the Unifi UDR7 setup doesn't go well first time. It should be fine, but just in case...

Beyond that careful thought about where you would like the fibre entry and Openreach ONT as that will be there for a long time.

Personally I have mine in a cupboard near the meters (as that was possible) but it all depends on the constraints and preferences in your home.

The phone wiring doesn't matter but the install visit may provide an opportunity for a tidy up/removal of Openreach's side of the system (up to the master socket).
