Hi,

I have today completed my change from fibre 500 to 900.

Before, i was getting around 220mbps and 70 upload.

I have been told that the change has completed, however upon testing some of the devices there is no change.

My daughters iPad has now reached over 500mbps, however everything else seems to remain the same as before (around 200), any idea why this would be?

I have tried uploading a few photos but i don’t seem to be able too.

Thanks

They will need to be 5Ghz compatible, and wherever possible, connected by Ethernet cable to the router.

To upload photos, you should either be using a desktop/laptop, or using the desktop option on phones/tablets.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. That would be why I can’t add a photo. Any idea how to get the site into desktop mode for the forum?

The iPad is very new, a few months old.
I have Tested it on my phone (iPhone 14, an Xbox Series X (directly next to the route), and an Asus Vivobook bought at Christmas).

Before [on 500Mbps], i was getting around 220mbps and 70 upload.

Your kit or its distance from the Router were already the limiting factor on a 500Mbps service
and raising the service speed to the Router does not address that.

Only improving the Wi-Fi coverage by adding more Wi-Fi Access Points will improve the coverage in your home.

The Xbox Series X is directly next to the router, it couldn’t be any closer.

My daughters iPad before the upgrade was only getting around 220mbps, since the upgrade she is now getting over 500.

Similarly with my phone, and Laptop, I am sat around a foot away from the router.

Edit* in fact looking at my history of speed tests on my phone, i have on a couple of occasions hit the near 500 mark before the change (this was last year). I have never looked into why my speed would be so much lower since.

Please be reminded of this post, it was true for me when I used a Hub two.

The fact your upload speeds are around 100 Mbps suggests the speed upgrade has happened. You would need to prove you are not getting the 900 Mbps product speed with a wired connection to a LAN port of the Hub two for the reason already given.

2.4GHz wifi connection would probably be around 75 Mbps.

What we have seen are two images of the Wi-Fi speed tests.

What we don't have are the current speed tests of the cable connected XBOX.

I really like the Cisco Speed Test we have on VM that performs test first on on the VM Hub and then on the customers kit, you can imagine how much outrage it causes as it lays bare what that customer does not with to hear about their own kit or home network being at issue.

I did ask if a new router was required and I was assured not.

On another side note, why was I historically able to achieve (albeit temporarily) a speed near 500mbps?

500 is what I was expecting and with the change it hasn’t gone up at all.

Also, are you suggesting the Plusnet router is not capable of the speeds they are selling to me?

The router is perfectly capable of 900Mb , just wired not wireless

@DeeeeeJ

regarding your IP Address as it is a static IP Address (always the same) its just advised not to share it on a public forum. No rule breached just not advised.

I am on Full Fibre 900 / 100, I use a TP-Link router which supports WiFi 6. there are few considerations with WiFi.

The device being used, not all WiFi interfaces are equal, older devices might not support the faster speeds.

My HP laptop (WiFi 5 device) link speed is limited to 433.3 Mbps by the adapter, speedtest is typically is 340/100.

My Pixel 7 Pro (WiFi 6 device) a typical speed test is around 600 / 100

My Samsung Tab-S10 (WiFi 6 device) a typical speed test is around the same.

Distance from Wireless Access Point / router.

The use of WiFi extenders can also restrict WiFi speeds.

This is why a direct wired connection to the hub is required as the LAN using a CAT 5e or above cable as it bypasses the hardware restrictions a WiFi adapter on the device and Hub Two has.

Although you may be disappointed your'e not receiving the full paid for speeds on some devices, is this actually causing an issue with day to day use of them?

For any speedtest I suggest sharing the test result link rather than a image.

A positive, you have increased the upload speed to 100 Mbps which may be of a benefit to you.

I'll echo @Dan_the_Van s comments, Wireless speeds can be inconsistent and be limited by the router and/or the device.

I have a relatively new laptop with a Wifi 6 capable NIC and it always dissappointed me that it could only get around 400Mb with my previous router ( Zyxel VMG3925-B10C which is only Wifi 5). So eventually I upgraded the router to a Wifi 6 one (Cudy WR3000H) and now the lappie gets around 750Mb. I still had a problem that sometimes it would drop to around 150Mb. Its an Intel NIC and eventually I tracked it to needing the adapter property 'Mimo power saving mode' setting to 'No SMPS' .

I also had problems with an Android tablet, it refused to show above 50Mb on a speedtest. A similar spec Android phone in the same location would give >250Mb. My first thought was that it was connecting to the 2.4ghz band rather than 5ghz but since my router has the bands split that wasnt a possible explanation!. After much investigation I eventually gave up and decided (as Dan suggests) that it wasnt affecting the real-life performance so just accepted it. Some time after replacing the router with the Wifi 6 one I had cause to do a retest on the tablet, lo and behold it was now showing >400Mb, go figure!
