Hi,

I'm using an Apple M1 (2021) iMac, plugged into the Plusnet Hub two router via a Cat 8 ethernet cable.

Also I have an Apple M1 (2020) MacBook Air, usually WiFi (so, yes slower!) but when it's on my desk it's also plugged into the router via a second Cat 8 ethernet cable and Blekin USB-C to 2.5Gb ethernet adapter.

A family members Apple M4 (2024) MacBook Pro has also been used with the same conection as my Air - and that also had the same upload speed when tested.

As far as speed testing goes - I think I must have tried just about every UK broadband test site there is!! Multiple times.

I've also testing using Safari, Chrome and Firefox browsers.

Both my Macs are running the latest version of macOS (Tahoe 26.2)

I disable iCloud Private Relay for speed tests, and obviously I make sure my VPN is not active.

So I honestly don't think it's likely to be an equipment issue!

In my complaint letter I'm asking Plusnet to treat it as a formal fault and not a performance enquiry, and to escalate the issue to Openreach for an investigation of the upstream profile. To confirm the actual upstream rate limit applied to my circuit and to provide the Openreach product code and IP profile details for my line.

Plusnet will receive my letter tomorrow.

Upgraded from Fibre 500 to 900 and upload speed is unchanged

At the beginning of December I decided to upgrade my full fibre from 500 to 900.

Prior to upgrading I was consistantly getting 480Mbps to 500Mbps download speed and 65Mbps to 70Mbps upload speed.

I am now getting 880Mbps to 920Mbps download speed (brilliant 👍), but still exactly the same 65Mbps to 70Mbps upload speed...

Why hasn't my upload speed changed even slightly? 🤷‍♀️

I have some very large files which frequently move up and down from the icloud, so quicker uploads was a big motivation for upgrading my package.

I spoke to an engineer before Christmas who told me I needed a new router, and I duly received a new Plusnet Hub Two which is identical to the one I already had!! I've swapped it over, and as I expected it has made no difference!

So I phoned Plusnet again today to ask if they could check if Openreach have correctly reprovisioned my upstream line profile. Which I was told they have. To the correct 115Mbps upstream speed to go with my Fibre 900...

They then basically told me that sorry there's nothing else they can do about it, and that upload speeds aren't guarrenteed!

I wouldn't mind so much if I had seen at least some increase to say 80-90Mbps, then I could accept that is what my line is capable of... But the fact it hasn't changed even slightly makes me strongly suspect something's not set correctly.

Both my computers are plugged directly into the router, using the cable suplied with the router for one and my own Cat 8 ethernet cable for the second.

Anyone got any ideas?

It's not the end of the world - but I am dissapointed, and had I known I probably wouldn't have bothered with upgrading. (Though I am now enjoying the download speeds...! 😋)

Very likely your line has been incorrectly provisioned imho.

Yes. When I spoke to Plusnet yesterday I was told the my line is correctly provisioned (900/115), and then was told that there's nothing else they can do as it's not their end.....

So, not the best service!

Basically just shrug shoulders and blame the customers equipment.

I've also tested my broadband speed on my iPhone using Wifi - and the upload speed is the same 65-70Mbps it has always been since I've had fibre. (Download not reaching the full 900Mbps because wifi instead of ethernet cable for computers. Best is about 650Mbps when phone placed next to router - which is fine as I don't mind if the wifi's a bit slower, that's why I plug my computers in, as they need and can use the extra speed.)

Friends & family's devices all agree - my upload speed hasn't gone up even in the slightest...

If it had gone up to something at least higher than the previous upstream cap (which I think was 75Mbps), then yes - maybe I need a better cable or something. But I do feel like I'm being fobbed off and not getting what I'm now paying for.

90% certain I have - but just to be sure I'll try that again.

Actually - just remembered that I had a power cut over Christmas, so it 100% has had a restart. But I'll do it again just to be sure as it's not been restarted since I connected my new Hub Two router...

Thanks!

Turned both ONT & router off. Left for a minute then restarted ONT, followed by router a few mins later.

And........

Can I suggest you ask Plusnet to revert you to 550/75, test for a day, then provision your line again for 900/110 to see if it resolves your problem? ie. Mimic what Bob had to do 2 years ago for one customer.

Hi Lesley_W

If you could keep me in mind if a solution is found I'd be most grateful 😁 Even if it's just a post here telling me exactly what to say when I call the helpline.

Whist I can't of course be absolutely 100% sure that the issue's not my end, as I'm not an expert - It does feel a bit odd that my upload speed really hasn't changed in the slightest, across multible devices.

I might try calling Plusnet again next week to ask if perhaps putting my line speed down to 500/75 for a day or two, then provisioning it again back up to 900/115 to see if it "clicks in" properly, solves the problem.

Anyway - it's not exactly a major problem in my life. But it is a bit irritating!!!! 🤪

Many thanks

That would made a lot of sense... Thank you!

I will try calling customer service again soon - but since posting here life has rather got in the way by throwing up more pressing problems!!! 🥴 As in - I hit a pothole breaking my cars suspension right before its MOT! Good grief... 🤪 Great start to the year!

Anyway - car is now all fixed and has passed its MOT so back on the road 😁 ...and bank account a lot emptier! 🙄

So maybe next week I'll try pressing Plusnet again for a resolution...

Off topic: You should (at least try to) put a claim into the council for a failure to inspect and maintain the highway to a safe standard. Get photographs (with something to show size) and a report from your car servicer ... it can be a pain but worth it. I bent a wheel on a pot hole and successfully claimed out of pocket costs ... even following an initial refusal. I did though need to do a freedom of information request on the inspection and maintenance history for the road ... and found flaws in the records.

EDIT: My claim was 20 years ago ... they might be new loop holes (around the pot holes!).

Could these be reoccurrences of the idiosyncratic circumstances where what's in the tin is not the same as the label on the tin, thereby causing support to think that all is OK ... when it is not? It has been a while since the need to change product and reset back to the required product to get the right build has been discussed. Was that ever resolved ... or is it still out there like an abandoned mine field ?

I can't recall any definitive resolution. We could of course try the regrade 'hack' on @Nicky1's line however, we'd have to go down for a day or two before going back up.

Just to confirm... The "hack" is that I ask customer service put my line speed back down to 500/75, then call them again a few days later to it back to 900/115 in the hopes it "clicks in" properly.

Obviously having explained that I gather it's fixed the problem for other people so they don't think that I'm completely mad! 🤪

Okay - So now I'm pretty blooming exasperated... 😡

Just got off the phone with Plusnet, and whilst I can't fault the lady I spoke to for effort and taking the time to speak to her manager and even to have a look at this forum.

The bottom line is - Plusnet absolutely refuses to do anything about it as there is no upload speed guarentee, so they will not even try a "fix" which apparently worked for other customers.... 😠 I mean [-Censored-]!!!!!!!!!!!!

No matter how politely I ask - reprovisioning my line back down to 500/75 then putting it back up to 900/115 a few days later, even just to see if it makes any difference, is apparently too much to ask for!

Honestly, I may not be an engineer - but given my upload speed didn't change AT ALL with the upgrade in my plan, tells me that something isn't right.

If it had increased just a bit, I'd at least know that my line's been correctly provisioned for a higher speed...

It'd be nice if somebody (anybody!) at Plusnet would actually take ownership of an issue which clearly isn't unique to me, so that when I call I don't have to start again from "Have you switched everything off and on again dear..?" 🥴

Anyone got any ideas where I go from here?

Part of the issue here is that the CSC folks are first line support. Bob is way above that and knows lots of wicked stuff!!

@bobpullen

Thank for the response. It could appear that the front line is disinclined to attempt this for in part understandable reasons: if they are not aware of the background then they’ll not be inclined to follow an unknown path; there’s also the cost to consider.

However, in respect of the claim that upload is not guaranteed … does that actually apply to FTTP? Unlike xDSL, FTTP does not have the vagaries of copper circuits; sync speed should be what it’s provisioned at. Throughput speed is what it’s going to be, dependent on the end systems’ capacity and capability.

Is there room for movement here? How might one find out if the various tests have been run to verify circuit sync speed? There is the possibility that the user’s systems cannot push more upload than their previous product, but zero change does seem suspicious.
