@Townman

There are three basic roaming aggressive levels, the default is Medium. Network Properties might have five settings.

Lowest (1) Device will stick to the current AP until the signal quality is very poor or connection degrades significantly.
Medium (3) The default, balanced setting. The device roams only when necessary for performance.
Highest (5) Device actively and continuously tracks link quality and tries to find and roam to a better AP even when the current signal is still good.

The suggestion to set "Roaming Aggressiveness" to lowest with the "Preferred Band" set to 5GHz is an attempt to prevent the wireless connection switch to 2.4GHz in the first place.

There is always a but, I have found shutting the lid on my HP laptop it switches back to 2.4GHz which odd as the preferred setting is 5GHz, perhaps something to do with power saving.

For me I notice a slowness when connected to 2.4GHz over 5GHz.

90Mb/s sounds like the laptop isn't correctly negotiating a gigabit ethernet connection with the hub instead going for 100Mb/s.

The easy thing to try is a different cable as that is often the problem.

Otherwise it's looking for updated network drivers for the laptop or perhaps forcing the settings to gigabit rather than autonegotiate.

It will be the laptop rather than the Plusnet Hub but you could try a different Ethermet port on the Hub just to check.

I had the BT engineers over on 13/11/25 and they installed the new Openreach Full Fibre modem and then connected an Ethernet cable from the modem to my Hub 2 router

It's not clear to me if you are connecting your laptop using a LAN port or not. It would be normal for a laptop to use a WiFi connection. If you are connect using WiFi it could be the laptop has connected using the 2.4 GHz signal rather than 5 GHz

Disconnect the WiFi signal should hopefully switch it to 5GHz, I sometimes have to do this.

If you are using a LAN connection then check the previous advice given.

The Hub two GUI >Home >My devices will detail where a device has connected.

The Openreach ONT (modem) connects to the Hub Two WAN port which is correct, unfortunately your first post has been answered with poor advice.

As I stated it is likely your laptop is connecting to the hub on the 2.4 GHz signal that has a slower speed to the 5GHz connection.

Try turning off / on the wireless adapter to see if that resolves the issue. <- I refer to the laptop wireless interface

The Hub GUI (graphic user interface) is reached here http://192.168.1.254 when connected to your home WiFi

As long as you don't have any device that needs to use the 2.4GHz WiFi from the Hub 2 router you can log in to the Hub 2 and turn the 2.4GHz WiFi off, just leaving the 5GHz signal. That's what I did and I always get 150Mbps reported via the Test website.

BTW - The Openreach ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is not a "modem". No modem is used with Full Fibre as it is not a 'Broadband' based service operating over an analogue landline network. 😎

Consider how signals are translated.

Try plugging a 'router' directly into the fibres before the ONT. There will be a mismatch in the connection. There will be a mismatch in the underlying method of transmitting the data (optical to electrical conversion).

My mind says that the ONT is operating as a modem. It is converting an optical signal into an electrical signal (old style modems converted sound to electrical).

Of course, a lot of consumer grade 'routers' are not routers, but are mainly switches.

OK, at a guess then the laptop is the 5Ghz device, the printer the 2.4Ghz one, so you do need both bands. That suggests the problem is the laptop.

it is wireless, how would I set to prefer the 5ghz band?

Using Device Manager

Open Device Manager by pressing
Win + X
and selecting it, or by searching for it in the Start Menu.

Expand the Network adapters section.

Right-click on your wireless adapter (it may have "Wireless" or "Wi-Fi" in the name) and select Properties.

Go to the Advanced tab.

Find the Preferred Band or Band Preference property in the list.

Change the value to Prefer 5GHz band from the dropdown menu.

Click OK and restart your computer to apply the changes

"BTW - The Openreach ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is not a "modem". No modem is used with Full Fibre as it is not a 'Broadband' based service operating over an analogue landline network"

Modem stands for modulation-demodulation so you can exand it to an ont too.. And an ont is effectly a modem plus switch.

modern wifi routers are on a basic level; a switch, firewall, wireless ap, etc.

Try plugging a 'router' directly into the fibres before the ONT. There will be a mismatch in the connection. There will be a mismatch in the underlying method of transmitting the data (optical to electrical conversion).

Impossible! There is no optical input socket on a router. The ONT connects to the router via an electrical Ethernet circuit.

@Anonymous wrote:

So it's a media converter, optical digital signal to electrical digital signal?

Old style modems convert an electrical digital signal into an electrical analogue signal and vice versa.

What does Wikipedia say?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem

"A modulator-demodulator, commonly referred to as a modem, is a computer hardware device that converts data from a digital format into a format suitable for an analog transmission medium such as telephone or radio. A modem transmits data by modulating one or more carrier wave signals to encode digital information, while the receiver demodulates the signal to recreate the original digital information."

But it also says:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem#Optical_modem

"...installed inside or outside a house to convert the optical medium to a copper Ethernet interface..."

"They are not a modem,[disputed – discuss] although they perform a similar function and are sometimes referred to as a modem."

Let's decide to leave it there. 😉
