What about using a Mesh system such as the Halo H60X, which i think has Ethernet also ?

i dont need full connnection speed, but very much want more than 50mbps.

Morning,

Recently had FTTP and a new shiney ONT installed.

Had to chase to get it switched over, but got that done.

I am now in the odd position where my wired speeds are less than my wireless speeds.

My wired speed before on the old copper line was around 70mbps

using the same equipment with a new line on a 500mb connection i am now only seeing 50mpbs.

Upload speeds are higher (great news)

wiresless speeds (which i have no intrest in for my desktop pc) have soared and for the kids phones are great.

My pc is new ish, and has a gigabit card and im using cat5e cables.

The connection is ONT > Hub2 > Powerline adaptor > PC

I appreciate poweline adaptors are something of a dark art, but i would not expect my speed to have dropped given i now have a quicker connection than before and then only thing that has changed is the new FTTP connection.

Sensible suggestions please.

Which make and model powerline adapters are you using

I currently use TP-Link TL-PA4010, the ethernet connection is hardware restricted to 100 mbps the maximum speedtest is around 95 mbps.

Another superuser using 1000 mbps devices only gets a maximum speed of around 150 mbps.

HI Dan ,

BT Broadband Extnder 600.

However, my speed is less now than it was before on a much slower line.

Why would that be

The Extender you have only supports speeds up to 100 mbps so that will set a limit to your connection. I guess you've had these devices for a while?

There could be some buffering issues with the adapters which is causing the apparent slowness with them struggling to pass through the faster data as you would now expect speeds above 100 mbps

If possible I would look to either a fully wired connection or buy a 1Gb powerline adapter pair. TP-Link or Mercusys are trusted brands. Newer devices would likely have Quality of Service settings so they can be tuned for best performance.

Hopefully you'll see some improvement, but it is very likely you will not achieve anything near to your product speed

With a 500/75 product you should hopefully achieve near to 70 mbps upload speed but you will be short of the 500 download

Any chance of running ethernet cables to replace the powerline units? Gives a solid connection and is future proof.

Mesh system can have advantages but they also have a weakness being the backhaul (mesh interconnection) method used.

Might I suggest you use something like Gemini AI and research 'mesh backhaul options' it will save me some typing 🙂

There are few options to consider, hopefully it will help you decide if mesh is best for you, any question please ask.

Mesh etc is OK if WiFi is suitable but I prefer wired LAN for most devices. I had been using powerline - they were 1Gb/s port nano models and I saw speeds of up to 300Mb/s or so.

Moving to Fibre, whose speed will only increase over time, I arranged for some lengths of CAT 6, they were put external, it wasnt that expensive to get installed. I just use a combo of the Hub 2 and another AP device, the wired LAN speed is OK at 1Gb/s until higher is needed in the future.
