@Townman wrote:
@TheRealDabhand

So many people around here complain bitterly that their internet - which is essential to their employment - is not repaired instantly when it is broken. You raised the risk of being sacked for not having a working internet connection, thus it is appropriate you should be alerted to risks during service.

I would not want you to find yourself in that boat in the case of a connection failure … and then realise you were not aware that these services are not intended for anything more than occasionally working from home. Services are usually reliable and stable, but faults can and do happen and business grade services repairs are prioritised, usually having an assured 24 hour fix window. Residential services have a 3 WORKING days fix window, so if a broken service is reported on a Friday, it could be Wednesday before it is fixed.

I recognise you might not like that message, but there’s no need to flame the messenger.

Agreed the installation delays are another matter … but similarly business grade services are probably given priority installation timeframes.

Good luck.

You have to remember I am not everybody, each case is unique, I was worried about the failed appointments being a potential of being let go not the current connection as such which has had drop outs at times, nothing major. You assumed otherwise.

You also came in with that line, which again I have had seen countless times with VM, where they would push that everyone working from home should have a business line which is not true at all, they would love that as it would cost more but in the end it was not really different than any other line bar the fact support would act quicker, that is all.

So you have to understand that when you came to me like that, then said your employer did you a solid.. did you not think how that would come across? Here I am having problems getting FTTP, hitting brick walls to get this all sorted out, and you hit me with the my employer did me a solid, if you did not even hint that we would not be having this discussion, I would have chatted to you that I believe I shouldn't need a business line etc. But you turned my story into about you for a few seconds, knowing I am having a lot of issues... that isn't nice to read.

I am just saying, you need to make sure what you are saying doesn't come across potentially trying to make something about you positive when people are struggling to get a solution in a negative situation. It's not nice to read when you are in that situation, or even hear if it was a call.

(I know there would be drop off, but with 5m it should be low yes?).

Let me know your happy stories or horror stories lol

@TheRealDabhand When you move to a FTTP service, a new cable is run to your property, which terminates on an Optical Network Termination , which they will instal in place of your Master Socket - no copper is involved.

Under normal circumstances, this takes around 1.1/2 hours, and then you are good to go.

Any further questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks Jab1 for the reply, yeah I expected as such, but with the termination literally right outside my door (live in a block of flats of 3) I had hoped the small 5m of copper would be doable to get near the minimum speed at least.

So, your Master socket is outside your flat? I don't believe so - they are inside the served property, as they are 'personal' to that property.

A little more detail is required before we say more.

No, Master Socket is inside, but there is a communal cupboard with a termination in it, then it has copper to the flats to master sockets.

Sorry I should have been a bit more clear. My bad.

Yeah they did after 1yr after sending out letters to tenants of the flats, there is 15 in 3 blocks, I was the only one who signed the agreement. So it was a slow process to get everyone to sign one, thankfully 7 weeks ago they finished our block of 3, and were doing the other 2 blocks. Thankfully they just finished the other day, so I quickly ordered Happy that PN is allowing it, was worried I would have to pay ETF to go to BT, so was very happy to see the options listed

OK. If they have wired yup, they must have done a survey and determined how they plan to do the final installations.

I would be interested in what the narrative (below the results window) from the following says about FTTP.

https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

Normally forum users can offer a bit of advice about installs but we don't often see "communal" installs. I'm guessing fibre will be run to the communal cabinet and then pulled through to your flat. What will happen is the installer will speak to you on the day to explain things.

It is some odd OR internal abbreviation for Line to Cash and pops up on the checker for any non standard FTTP installation. I have seen it in some OR documents and can only assume it has has been dreamt up by bean counters.

The interesting thing is that the notes state it is a single unit dwelling, not multiple so something strange there.

Openreach terminology is in a world of its own, @RealAleMadrid , but if it was liable to cost the EU, presumably PN would be advised, and pass that information on to the customer?

As regards the SUD comment - see above. 😉

L2C is simply Openreach terminology for Lead to Cash. Meaning it is not a simple installation, and would need an experienced installer to try and find a simple solution.

So for @TheRealDabhand get your best China out, stock up with choky digestives, fig rolls or even millionaires shortbread and be be prepared to do all you can to make sure the Openreach rep has the simplest job they can. Have a real good look at how the current line comes to your property, work out if fibre could be done in a more simple way, consider installing trunking with a draw cord, getting any techy mates round to have a look to help with ideas, basically the more you can do to help will pay off.

Otherwise like the bank, the cop who pulls you over, the computer will say no or you fail the attidute test - hopefully upi know what I mean.

@Mustrum Had a friend who is ex-BT engineer, had a nosey and told me the best and easiest way is for them to drill through go over a couple of doors along the frames and to the next available outlet. Otherwise to get to the master socket it would require a lot of work and getting into the wall itself, which of course is a no no. So guess that will be the quickest way to do it, come in bottom of wall, staple gun cable around skirtings and 2 door frames to the first electrical outlet and put the fibre socket there so the router can be plugged into the wall.
