Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

Hi Everyone,

I kind of tearing my hair out here... Sorry for the long rant:

TLDR: New FTTP connection installed, ONT getting 160mbps down, 30 up), Plusnet Hub Two only putting out 1mbps or less download but consistent 30ish up. Openreach say all is well and it's a Plusnet issue, Plusnet saying it's Openreach.

- We had full fibre to the premises installed by a very kind Openreach engineer on June 28th. She checked the line and all was working perfectly. She left. Email from Plusnet to say all is up-and-running. Router plugged in and getting less than 1mbps download but 20-30 up.

- Called Plusnet helpline the next day and spoke to the very helpful Damien. Did all the things such as a speed tests, factory reset etc. Line checked from Plusnet side and no fault found, so a new router was ordered.

- New router arrives. Plugged in with new cables etc. Problem persists. Call Plusnet, Openreach engineer booked for the 4th.

- Joy! On the afternoon of Wednesday 3rd it all starts to work perfectly! Engineer visit cancelled.

- Less joy: next day back to less than 1mbps down (still 20-30 up).

- Day after it works again.

- Day after that it's back to sub 1MBPS down and remains that way until now.

- More calls to Plusnet: still looking good from their side. Engineer now re-booked for July 10th

- July 10th, another very nice Openreach engineer comes. He tests the incoming cable, all perfect, no fault. Tests ONT box, all good with that, but replaces it anyway for good measure. All great incoming to ONT (160mbps down, 30 up), but speed from router now a record 0.04MBPS down, 30+ up. He calls Openreach Second Line who can find no fault and send a report to Plusnet along with the engineer's report. All is well with the line and so he thinks it has to by a problem with my Profile, which can only be reset by Plusnet.

- I call Plusnet and explain my problem yet another person. He can't see Second Line's report but looks at the engineer's report, which he finds unhelpful. Tells me he needs to call Openreach but they're now closed for the day, but he will do so first thing and call me back.

- Next day: No call back

- I call again and now speak to William. It turns out my representative from yesterday has had "his workday re-assigned" so is no longer following up. William can't help, but very helpfully says he will seek out someone who can. It seems the engineer's report has now gone from the system. Also the engineer's visit the previous day is now marked as being missed. I briefly think I may have hallucinated him, but I'm pretty sure he came as he left written notes... I'm promised a call back.

- No call back

- Get a text saying an Openreach engineer is book to come tomorrow morning. Highly inconvenient, but I change my plans nevertheless as I need working internet for my job.

- I call back to suggest that the engineer will probably find everything the same, but I'm told that unless I have had two engineer visits, they can't elevate the problem.

- I get an email an hour later from Mark, saying that they hope the problem will be sorted by July 15th and that a member of the faults team will be in contact. I'm not holding my breath.

So, it seems that there is nothing wrong with the supply coming into the house, and the router and cables have all been replaced. That only leaves sorting on the provisioning side from Plusnet (my Profile) or some other issue like my supply is banded/limited. Or am I missing something? An issue with router firmware or settings?

How do I get Plusnet to actually look in detail at their side and get this fixed?

Any help (or just comfort) gratefully received!

James

Are you a new Plusnet customer ?

Are these speeds wired or wireless ?

Thanks for your speedy reply, MisterW!

Yes, I'm a new customer on a brand new FTTP install. ONT is pumping out 160mbps, router 0.04.

No, no static IP, and these are wired speeds. Replaced Plusnet Hub Two router as well, so it's not that that's on the fritz either.

The weird thing is that it worked perfectly for about a day and a half, which suggests that it's not the router but something on the supply end.

Seems to be a head-scratcher all round...

The connection to the router should show 1000Mbps.

Is there anything else connected to the router that could be downloading content when you are doing these speed tests?

The Openreach engineer measured the 160Mbps from the ONT. Router stats do indeed show a WAN link speed of 1000Mbps.

No nothing else connected to the router. Also the same recorded on the engineer's laptop as well.

It's a very long shot, but you don't still have anything associated with the system prior to the full fibre install powered or connected do you (old router etc.)?

If so it would be worth disconnecting.

No, there was no prior system - we're so out there and far from the exchange that broadband wasn't an option. We've been using a very unstable 4g router.

@jwalowe76 there's a lot of frequent wifi device connection/disconnection in that log.

Have you got a device that can make a wired (ethernet) connection to the router ?

The results of a wired speed test should define whether the problem is with the actual FTTP connection OR is just a wireless issue ?

Thanks for all your help everyone - small improvement to speed this morning:

Ethernet wired speed now a blistering 3.80Mbps download, upload 28.50Mbps.

The Openreach engineer is about to arrive - I'll update later with their conclusions!

Thanks

Okay an update:

- very nice Openreach engineer came and once more ran through all the tests: ONT working perfectly, perfect signal etc. still only 3.89Mbps down and 28.57 up (wired connection).

- She spent about an hour on the phone to Openreach Second Line who did all the possible tests they can also do.

- Her report and Second Line's report now going to Plusnet, with the instruction that they should "cease and re-provide". She advised that I should call them tomorrow to give the time for the reports to get in and ask for "cease and re-provide" if they don'f offer it.

I really do appreciate everyone's help with this issue. As you can imagine it's deeply frustrating as I'm now unable to work from home.
