@Flourgrader Yes, you do get the Hub2 - that is the default offering from PN for any new connection.

For the mobile question - PN do not offer SIMs - that is now via EE, but you can get much better deals elsewhere - try a few comparison sites.

If its this one https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/dsl-modem-router/archer-vr2800/ then , yes.

Like the Hub 2 , one of the LAN ports can be re-purposed as a WAN port, see here https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/1731/

You would then just need to configure the WAN connection as PPPoE with your PLusnet username & password

@Flourgrader I'm not sure those options will be available once its set to Wireless Router Mode.

Doesn't matter though, just set the Internet Type to PPPoE and use the Plusnet username/password. There's no need for any VLAN ID setting on FTTP like there is for VDSL

I would still take the PN router - if nothing else it's a back up.

If you're happy with your current WiFi coverage the Hub2 could just be left in the box. If not, then try it to see if it's better. Just remember you'd need to change the WIFi setting to what you currently use.

I don't know anything about the Hub 2 so I carn't compare yet to which might be the best router.

CPU in the Archer VR2800 router is a bit [-Censored-]. its slow on big file transferes across the internal network.

Now that's a point to consider. What speed FTTP are you going for ?

From what I can see the VR2800 has a dual core 1GHz processor, so its probably only able to cope with around 500Mb WAN->LAN throughput unless its got any hardware NAT fucntionality and that assumes you don't enable any QoS settings.

500Mbps would be fast enough for me. Probably 300Mbps would do.

Only thing is there is not a big price difference between the 2. So why not have more.

Do you know what CPU is in the Hub 2

No, but I'm reliably informed that its designed for and can handle a 1Gb FTTP connection.

I have just fired off a email asking helpdesk at TP to give me that information.

Be interested to hear what response is forthcoming.

For information I currently use a Ubiquiti ER-X running OpenWrt which has a dual core 880Mhz MT7621 processor. With hardware NAT enabled it will handle my 900 Mb FTTP connection fine. Disable h/w NAT and it peaks out at around 450Mb.

@Flourgrader wrote:

You will find the Hub Two DHCP server not as configurable as any TP-Link router, with the VR2800 you are able to add the devices MAC address and assign a IP Address before you connect it. This is not possible with a Hub two, the device has to be connected have an IP Address assign before you change it to what you wish and make 'always use this IP Address'

Alternatively you set the devices on your network which requires one with fixed IP Addresses.

Also you can not use some 10.0.0.0/8 network ranges.

Before you change any setting on the VR2800 take a backup.

In advanced setting change >Operation Mode change to Wireless Router Mode

Then setup the PPPoE connection >Network >Internet >+Add

Plusnet use CHAP so you could also change Authentication Type to CHAP.

Then 'Save'

EDIT: LAN4 will become the WAN port for connection to the ONT

HTH
