Just upgraded my fibre package from 150mb to 500mb, activation date on the email was for yesterday but still no change, can anyone clarify if it only switches over once I’ve next been billed or is there something wrong here?

@Anonymous

"Perhaps it needs a router reboot to trigger a change in IP profile on re-establishing a new PPPoE session ?"

I'm guessing from the speeds quoted, the OP is on FTTP?

If that is the case, then I thought that any change in speed profile would be changed within the ONT, rather than the router - which should always be syncing with the ONT at 1000Mbps, even if their current contract speed is "only" 150Mbps? So rebooting the router wouldn't achieve anything in this case?

Or, have I misunderstood how FTTP works?

@Anonymous my "thought" was that possibly (I don't know) that any new IP speed profile update "might" need to be triggered somewhere along the existing FTTP connection route, perhaps in the ONT, or the exchange where the FTTP terminates, or Plusnet handover point, etc

Therefore my suggestion of rebooting the router, was to force a new PPPoE session to be established over the entire route, in the hope that whatever needs changing IP profile gets triggered. I wasn't expecting anything locally at the home router to change, because as you say it will always "see" a 1Gbit WAN connection to the ONT.

As a suggestion, it is something that @Dbgreen could do themselves, would have been quick and cost nothing to try, and if it had worked would have meant that they wouldn't have to contact Plusnet support, and unlike a router reboot on ADSL or FTTC there is no chance of DLM down-rating the FTTP connection.

As it turns out, the speed upgrade hadn't been applied yesterday as expected, but hopefully should complete by tomorrow.

@Anonymous very likely. The connection is initially partially authenticated by the BTw concentrator ( using the BBEU and PN username ) which then routes the connection to the PN gateways for full authentication. I suspect the connection to the BTw concentrator would need to be remade to pick up any new profile.

@MisterW I hadn't previously spotted that BBEU is in plain sight in the router's PPP logs !

<LI-CODE lang="markup">Feb 4 13:29:00 ppp 97055 [wan_link0] MESG: BBEUxxxxxxxx 74678000/20000000</LI-CODE>

that log entry has inadvertently answered a question that I had been pondering over earlier this week, so thanks for the nudge !

I had been trying to make sense of all the various data rate numbers associated with my SoGEA connection, but hadn't figured out exactly where that "74678000" number came from, as it shows up in my ISP's "Control Panel". I've just realised that that is my connection's actual raw line rate, and fits in the speed profile hierarchy as follows -

<LI-CODE lang="markup"> Modem attainable speed = 78608120
Modem actual sync speed = 78243000
PPP line rate = 74678000 : 95.4% of modem sync
BT Wholesale IP Profile = 72500000 : 97.1% of line rate, or 92.7% of modem sync
ISP traffic profile (95%) = 69643694 : 96.1% of IP profile, or 93.3% of line rate</LI-CODE>

I'll have to take a closer look at my ISP's traffic profile, which I manually set to 95% (to allow prioritised incoming VoIP packets through), but the numbers suggests I actually have 96%.

The other download numbers that I've still not squared with anything, are those that come back from performing a BT "end-to-end" test on my VDSL connection, resulting in -

<LI-CODE lang="markup">BT Test E2E Access Test/DCN:Pass OR test pass. No fault found.
Down: 74.9 (77.7 / 78.9 / 79.9)
Up: 20.0 (20.0 / 20.0 / 20.0),
0.128M-80M Downstream, Retransmission High - 0.128M-20M Upstream, Error Protection Off</LI-CODE>

Any ideas what any of "74.9 (77.7 / 78.9 / 79.9)" refer to ?

Off the top of my head, no! but I'll have a think.

I'm a tad surprised the BBEU is visible ?

I realise its not a PN connection but is it a BT wholesale provider ?

AIUI the BBEU is inserted into the PPPoE (or DHCP for TT/Sky) negotiation by the DSLAM (for VDSL) and the OLT(for FTTP), so Im not sure how the router would get it ?

"[wan_link0]" looks like a separated sequence of PPP interactions dealing with LCP and CHAP negotiation, which when complete the "link0" joins the "wan" bundle, and from then on the log entries refer to "[wan]" as PPP carries on associating WAN addresses for IPv6, IPv4, and a /30 block, etc.

That's a pity, because if BBEU was shown in the Hub2 PPP log, then that would have been an easy way for other customers to get their BBEU without attempting to extract it from Plusnet customer support who seem clueless when asked for it.

without attempting to extract it from Plusnet customer support who seem clueless when asked for it.

That's because PN, and most of the mass-market ISP's use call centres, sometimes with useless first-line staff. I call mine and get directed to an agent fully trained in the subject, who can then transfer me to someone else if I ask a question they are unsure of the answer to. Did that this morning, and spoke to four different people.

I don't understand how you are seeing it.

The router constructs the pppoe request including your username & password but it doesn't know your bbeu. The pppoe relay-agent in the DSLAM inserts the bbeu & circuit I'd into the pppoe request using the vendor specific field.. when the reply comes back from the authentication the relay- agent strips out the vendor specific field so the router shouldn't be seeing it ?
