Homebrew Router

I'm curious as to how the ONT operates. I've read it has an ethernet port, so does this mean I can use a homebrew linux router without having to deal with authentication settings that exist in a VDSL router/modem? i.e. could a single computer connect directly to the ONT without using plusnets own router?

My understanding is you still have to authenticate.

I'm not a techie but I understand you can use any modem / router that has a WAN port and is VDSL capable.

You can also connect a PC direct but it needs PPoE (I think) settings to work.

@bmc, for a Full Fibre product it wouldn't need VDSL at all, but yes, anything with a PPPoE client could connect.

@neur0maniak, that would also have been possible on any of the FTTC products as well with a VDSL modem.

Yes you can use a computer to connect directly to the ONT. You still need to set up authentication on the PC. It should be PPoE with your Plusnet username in the form <username>@plusdsl.net and your account password. This article tells you how to connect a modem to a windows PC.
