Moving from Plusnet to EE

Had an email from Plusnet advising that if they don't hear from me within 30 days I will be moved to EE. A new router will be sent and telephone will need to be plugged into the router. Currently on FTTC. I spoke to Plusnet and they are telling me that if I move to EE in this way, I will also have to move to FTTP with all that entails, ie, installation of an ONT box and an ethernet run from that box to the router. Is this actually correct? Nothing about that in the information that I have been sent. I thought if being moved to EE by PN it was assumed that the customer could stay on FTTC.

@KDPN2015 Are you in a 'Fibre Priority' area? If not, you could move to EE on an FTTC connection, although if they offer you an FTTP connection, I would take it.

Do you need a 'land-line' phone?

John, thanks. I don't know if I am in a fibre priority area. However, OpenReach have just 'fibred up' the block of flats where I live. I don't need a landline phone. I don't fancy having to have a mains socket installed in the area where the ONT box will likely need to be installed. (Can't see the OpenReach engineer be willing to do a lot of work to put the box in a convenient place.) If I can stay on FTTC that would be good as no work required and is fast enough for what I need. As I said, nothing in the Plusnet bumph about having to move to FTTP if accepting the move to EE option.

Result says exchange is not in a current fibre priority programme.

So, you could stay with PN on a SOGEA connection (FTTC without the phone element). I would call PN and ask them to move you to that service.

You do not need to move to EE if you don't want to.

However you do need to make a decision. Phone services are being phased out so you need to consider either SOGEA (FTTC without the phone) or Full Fibre.

PN are actively encouraging people to move to Full Fibre if it's available.

As you're not bothered by a phone service your decision is quite easy but it needs to be made soon and PN advised accordingly.

There is some leeway as to where the ONT goes, especially if there's not a power source available. You talk to the engineer on the day. Have a look at the following. Note that as the router is connected by ethernet cable it can go anywhere you're happy to run said cable so two power sources are not necessarily required.

I'm going ahead with the move to EE as I do want to keep the phone line active.

I'm on a fibre priority exchange (I checked using the links in previous replies above). So does that mean EE will definitely move me to FTTP as part of the change, or will they ship a hub and keep me on FTTC for the rest of the contract at least? I'm trying to figure out what hub/router EE will provide so I can see what features it supports (eg. guest network)? The picture on the EE leaflet seems to show a Hub Plus 7 but those are fibre only I think?

@ntpntpntp I am in the same position. I'm currently on FTTC, but will be allowing Plusnet to transfer me to EE. I'm also in a FTTP priority exchange.

Despite Plusnet stating in the email & letter & FAQ that no engineer visits are required, and all that's required is a new router, I was told on the phone that I will be forced to go FTTP. I don't know why this couldn't have been mentioned in the correspondence & FAQ.

Decided to go with FTTP. simplest plan, and save around £8 per month. Live in a flat in a block so the fibre cable will come in above the front door. Don't want the OR engineer tacking the fibre cable around so will put a mains extension cable block nearby where the fibre cable will enter and run the mains cable neatly in minitrunking. The extension cable has 4 outlets so is of the type that can be hooked onto screws in the wall and will likely be further secured with some silicone sealant. Other end will be plugged into a power outlet so I think that will not be deemed a permanent installation by the IEE regs as it can be unplugged. Also toying with the idea of using a low voltage extension cable to put between the ONT and its power adapter, as an alternative, but not sure how long that cable could be before an undesirable voltage drop could occur. Plan is to put the router where I want it and to connect it to the ONT via some ethernet cable. I am thinking set things up so that the OR engineer has the least amount of fibre cabling to run. I am quite happy to set up a mains supply as described and run ethernet cable at a later date.

After it is running on a temporary basis, you could get a fibre extension kit and then move the ONT to where you have power and even as far as back next to the router

Alternatively, you can power the ONT over the Ethernet cable using a PoE Injector, for example TpLink POE 160S, at the router and a PoE splitter, for example, TpLink PoE 10R at the ONT. I have tested this pair out on my set up. The Ethernet cable is about 25m long.

Thank you. I will consider that or maybe powering the ONT via a low voltage extension cable from the power adapter. My plan is a bit up in the air at the moment as I recently discovered that cables from the ONT (ie, ethernet and low voltage DC) within mini trunking need to be properly supported to avoid entanglement with fire fighters in the event of a fire. Looking at whether suitable small gauge fire resistant mini trunking is available. If it's not then that will determine where the ONT can be positioned. I assume that the fibre cable to the ONT will be supported by fire resistant clips.

The fibre to the ONT is either very short or comes into the back box of the ONT - so internally invisible.
