He's never had broadband.

I don't quite see how that differs technically from a current voice circuit. Yes at point of sale it has customer selection / qualification restrictions but technically is that not how (pure) voice is already ? All IP behind the exchange.

From the customer's point of view it looks the same. From the exchange end of the phone line it is rather different - instead of a telephone exchange there is something like a VoIP ATA. The exchange equipment can be removed as part of the PSTN switch off, and the (very) few customers that need to remain on an analogue phone circuit can do so (for a few more years).

Who is your father's phone provider? They may or they may not support the new product.

It is meant to be a short term solution but in this case that appears to mean a few years.

You, or your father, will need to research this now as your father analogue line is going sometime within a year.

It's Pulse8

I switched him some years ago due to them having no call connection charges.

I would suggest you or your father need to contact Pulse8 asap to find out what their plans are for the end of PSTN.

Better to find out now while you have time to think about what to do rather than wait and be given a deadline to make a choice.
