Hi, just a quickie here for anyone that's had Plusnet Full Fibre installed and an Openreach ONT box on the inside of their property.....

.....how long is the power lead please, if someone can measure their's.

Assume it's they are all a fixed length, but really need to know the measurement in advance of ordering a Full Fibre product due to lack of plug sockets.

Thank you.

As stated it's 1m. In the short term an extension cable can be used while you sort things out.

Note that there is a certain leeway as to where the ONT goes which is discussed on the day with the installer. You might be able to get the ONT closer to a power source than you think.

The router is connected by ethernet cable so can go anywhere you like if you're happy to run cable.

Hi all, thanks for the replies. Wish it was a 1.5m power cable from ONT to plug

Please see photo below: the left side is the outside wall at rear of house, window above radiator. We were hoping engineer could drill through outside and put ONT box someone in the red area I have drawn on the left outside wall, just to the right of the radiator and window. We only have the one plug socket available next to the (very heavily filled) wardrobe.

So:

a) Do you think if ONT could be fitted here, the power cable would reach the single socket?

b) The white cable you can see is from a security light that is drilled through window frame with a plug on the end, but will give way to the new ONT box.

c) Is there enough room when we move all the stuff out the way between the left wall where we'd like ONT box and the wardrobe for an engineer to work? We really don't want to have to empty this wardrobe but I personally don't think there is enough room for the engineer to pull a cable from outside into the room and fit the ONT box

Otherwise we have to totally empty and move the wardrobe so he can work, and/or get an electrician to convert single socket to a double one, then security light can go in left side, and ONT power lead in the right half.

BTW the Plusnet router is going on a shelf in the entrance hall, so we will be needing a long ethernet cable / lead from the ONT box, along the skirting of this box room, outside the door to the landing, then down the first few stairs to a shelf on the hall wall.

Why is it so complicated?!

This might be a bit tight but I would not expect it to be much of a problem. The hole is drilled from the inside out. The internal fibre has a ready terminated connector so is again installed from the inside out. Regarding the ONT lead, as @Dan_the_Van points out, extensions are both cheap and readily available.

Thank you, good to know. Just don't want engineer to turn up then say "No, can't fit it, make another appointment" and disappear , leaving us to make new appointment for a further 4+ weeks. We wouldn't be able to empty it and move double wardrobe in 10 minutes even if he waited

The question to ask yourself is - could you fit a drill with a long bit into the space between the wardrobe and the wall?

A simple power extension would work short term if the power lead doesn't reach.

As the installer has external work to do I'm sure you could get yourself 10 minutes of so to empty and move the wardrobe or you could just bit the bullet and do it before hand.

Of more interest at the moment is where is the current master socket in relation to wher you want the ONT. Is it on the same external wall?

Is the router going upstairs or downstairs in the hall way?

I'm not DIY skilled at all and have no idea how long a long drill bit is!

It will take a very, very long time to empty and move that wardrobe as the room is chock full, not the engineers fault I know.

Directly below this room is the tiny square kitchen, and to the right of that is the dining room where the current master socket is, which I believe will NO LONGER BE USED.

There is also a BT socket just the other side of the wall with the wardrobe on, in the main bedroom (that will be our sons room) that comes in to the room to the left of the window but it's all been decorated, painted, carpeted and my OH doesn't want any electrical broadband stuff in his room, hence hoping engineer will bring fibre cable into this box room. [It's a 100 year old Victorian house].

EDIT: Sorry, yes. Same wall where current phone line comes into house, one into bedroom next to this and one in dining room

Why not ask for the external fibre to be brought externally along the gable wall and brought in closer to the other power socket?

Is this an overhead or underground connection? The information under the table if you put your address in here will tell you? https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome

If it's underground you may have issues if the installer doesn't have the means to access the first floor level.

Unless you can persuade the installer to fit the CSP internally, it will be installed externally at ground level. So fibre will be routed down the wall to ground level then back up to enter your property.

Have you considered other locations on the ground floor?

It's a 100 year old Victorian house with crumbling, loose pointing (owner got ripped off by some cowboy pointing company years ago, but thats another matter).

It's overhead so will come and join house at front outside toilet like existing phone lines, but then come down say 6 feet and are then tacked half way up gable wall, round the back then one goes down into dining room while other is on this level in bedroom next to THIS one.

So you are saying it will come from pole, down to ground floor, round back of house (how?), then up back of house wall into this box room. Great. Just assumed cable runs from fastening at top of house at the front, along gable wall like 10 feet up, round back then into box room we want

I missed the bit which suggests you want the ONT installed upstairs.

As it's an O/H feed this shouldn't be a problem. If you're luckly you can get the CSP fitted internally near the ONT. As ever, you simply don't know until until the day of install when you speak to the engineer.

As to the ethernet cable - assuming there is a cupboard under the stairs have you considered running the ethernet cable externally, bringing it back in under the stairs and then out to the hallway.

Can you post a diagram of the external route, indicating where the pole is? Thanks.

If it wasn't for the terrible state of the crumbly, seriously damp penetrated gable end wall, having it come in at this point (see red arrow, below) would be great, but then how would the power lead from the ONT which he'd install on the inside of the gable end wall - reach the other single power socket if it's only 1m long?.

But it would mean less ethernet cabling to do to get out the room, along landing and down first few stairs.

So why not follow the same route as the copper and have the ONT installed in the dining room?

Posts are crossing here.

Two options, either a mains extension lead or a low voltage extension lead as previously mentioned.

@Baldrick1 Just too long a route with archways and two doors to overcome with very long ethernet leads. Plus (drum roll), there isn't a power socket anywhere near where the BT socket is in the dining room.

Sorry for sounding nit picky and ungrateful, it's NOT my house and my OH doesn't want loads of extension leads, cabling, power points etc etc .

You're not nit picking at all, I was just questioning whether you had explored all the options for making the job easier, not more complicated.

I understand the need to keep OH happy. In order for me to install my Router in the hall, with the ONT in the dining room I had to install a CAT 6 cable from the downstairs dining room back outside, along the outside wall then up an existing conduit (I have also hidden ground level to roof soffit level Ethernet cables by fixing them to the back of drain pipes). to the loft. From here, across the loft, down into a bedroom built in wardrobe, through the floor into the kitchen behind a tall built in oven unit. It then goes down behind the oven, under the kitchen units and through a wall into the hall. Not a bit of cable is to be seen.
