topic Moving from Plusnet FTTC (with line rental) to AltNet FTTP and moving phone to VOIP in Everything else

Hello folks,

My Plusnet FTTC contract ("Unlimited Fibre Extra inc. Line rental") finishes in August this year and I have taken the plunge and gone with a local FTTP provider for my future interweb requirements. The FTTP was installed yesterday and seems to be absolutely fine.

My question is - obviously I will need to give notice to end my Plusnet contract sometime in the next few months, but if I want to port my landline number to a VOIP provider, is there an order I should do things in to ensure I don't lose the number? Or can I just go ahead and request a VOIP provider to port the number now (or soon at least).

Thanks all!

If you have the alternative FTTP installed and working and therefore no longer need the Plusnet broadband, then you can go ahead and port the number anytime you like. The port will automatically cease your Plusnet broadband and cancel your account. There may be ETCs if you are still in a contract though.

In any case, you should request the number port rather than give notice, as porting an active number is less troublesome than a recently ceased one.

Also, look on the altnet website, they may pay (credit to account) your ETC for you, mine did.

I ported my landline number to a voip provider ( voiphone) and when the port completed the broadband on the copper line ceased.

the process was simple: sign up to FTTP, and then i signed up to voipfone and got hold of an ATA ( telephone adaptor)

when the fttp was installed and running, i ported the number to my voipfone account and everything works from there.

the ATA needs lan/ethernet port on your router and the one i have is powered by USB - using a port on the router for power
