Full fibre - how?

I have an email from Plusnet saying they can supply Full Fibre broadband to my house. At the moment I have copper cable from the cabinet, so my question is, how can that be done, and will they have to dig up the road and my driveway to install it?

Do you have an underground or overhead supply currently?

OpenReach lay a completely new fibre cable to your house through existing ducts or from the overhead pole. No digging is required unless there is a blocked duct or no duct exists.

You can use the following to confirm FTTP is available. You're looking for WBC FTTP in the left hand column and Available over to the right, Below the results window will be a narrative on FTTP install.

Note you'll lose your landline if you switch to FTTP.

Firstly check if this is an email specific to your home or a more general statement.

This will tell you what is possible at your address via Openreach.

Then have a bit of a look around. If your phone wire is overhead you will be aware of it and the serving pole.

If you are currently connected via an underground cable then there is often a little grey box on an outside wall and a tube or cable coming up from the ground. That suggests a duct and may be shared with a neighbour. With luck that might be able to be used to bring you a fibre.If that is blocked something will need to be dug up.

Typically if service is offered the fibre will be already in the street so it's unlikely the road will need to be dug up.

Thanks for the reply.

My phone line comes from a telegraph pole wire, runs down the front of the house, and goes through a small hole in the wall. According to the link, it's available at 1000 VDSL whatever that means, and on the right it says available. I do remember Virgin Media was digging up the pavement down the road quite a few years ago, but not heard anything about fibre from Plusnet and as far as I can see nothing has changed line-wise.

My main concern is I have a block paved drive, and I'm worried it will be ruined if it's dug up for a phone line.

If the pole has been readied for FTTP it will have something attached to it that looks like this.

This is a Connectiorized Block Terminal (CBT). The number of ports will depend on the number of properties served by the pole.

From here a new fibre cable would be run to your house and brought down to a Customer Splice Point (CSP) attached to the outside of the house. The fibre is then brought in to an Optical Network Terminator (ONT) - this needs power. There is a bit of leeway as to where the CSP and ONT go but you would talk the the installer to see what's can be done to agree a location.

Your router connects via an ethernet cable so can go anywhere you're happy to run said cable.
