If you do a search online for BT Extension wiring (or similar) you should be able to find a site giving the history of wiring colour schemes.

If I remember correctly there might even be a BT / OR site.

I couldn't find the site I had in the back of my mind.

You need to check any instructions you have for wiring an extension to your Master Socket but apart from that I think you can use either of the pairs you have available. Just make sure each cable gets connected to the same pin on both sockets (I believe 2 & 5 are used).

in which case it has stranded conductors and isnt going to work too well in puch down IDC connections ( should use solid core )

Are you planning on using the extension for broadband i.e to connect a router ? if so then use either CW1308 or even Cat5e

Yes m8 the router is currently in the living room with solid concrete walls and a poor connection, I noticed the previous owner had the old extension cable with plug attached at dangling under the socket. We are getting CCTV installed and I thought I would put the CCTV equipment and router in the hallway cupboard, In tryed the router in there ising the existing old extension and it works. So yes the answer.

@Alex2x

At the most basic level, phone wiring is fairly simple. There are two wires incoming from the street (your 2 & 5). What you have is a master socket and it has a capacitor (the large white thing) that makes the bell ring (on older phones).

The blue & blue white (the line) are connected.

The red/blue/green/white (older phone cable) which I guess you are planning to use will need to connect to the line (5 & 2). If it is a stranded cable you will need some kind of intermediate box as it won't punch down on the terminals in the box.

The following has a plausible colour code. To be honest I've seen various usages, the most important thing is to be consistent between the two ends.

https://telephonesuk.org.uk/wiring-info/

The "correct" way of doing this cabling would be to have the extension cable plug in to the phone socket so the "BT side" and "customer side" can be disconnected in the case of faults. That is what the modern phone master socket does. You don't seem to have enough slack to make this a nice job so it may be a question of what can be achieved.
