Email migration

I have been notified that my email and domain will transfer to Greenby from 6 Sep. Although I have diligently read all the notes and threads on this topic I am still uncertain about some aspects, and would appreciate guidance.

1. How do I access email setup on the current plus.net site, so I can check my current settings? I can't seem to find my way there now.

2. I use Outlook Classic on my PC to access email via SMTP and POP. Am I correct I won't need to change any of these settings? Ditto for IMAP on iPhone / iPad?

3. My main concern. I have a domain (mydomain.com) which is registered with Fasthosts and hosted by Plusnet. Nameservers are set in Fasthosts to ns1.force9.net. I don't have a webspace but my family and I use numerous email accounts using addresses like myemail@mydomain.com. Continuous access to these emails is fairly existential, as they are our main source of 2FA. Will these emails continue to function seamlessly on all the various devices (PC / Mac / iPhone / iPad) we use?

4. I am spooked by the bit in the warning email that says "you will need to change the nameservers from the Plusnet name servers to the Greenby name servers once your email has migrated". This seems to be a chicken and egg situation. How will I even see Greenby's welcome email if it is sent to myemail@mydomain.com, when the nameservers are still pointing at Plusnet but the domain has transferred to Greenby hosting? Surely this and all my other email will be lost until the nameserver is changed in Fasthosts to point to Greenby? Reassurance on this point would be welcome!

5. Is the warning that emails might be lost for 24 hours a norm or an upper bound? What has been the experience of people in similar situations who have already migrated?

Sorry if these are naïve questions. I would greatly welcome assistance.

The email is sent to the contact address on your Plusnet account. I'd suggest (if it isnt already) that you (temporarily) set that to one of your native (<account>.plus.com ) plusnet addresses. The nameservers for the native domain will not be affected.

Thanks for the advice. That touches on something else I don't understand. When Plusnet sends me an email I see two copies in my inbox: one addressed to myname@mydomain.com and another to myname@mydomain.plus.com. My contact email set for my Plusnet account is myname@mydomain.com. I have not set up POP or IMAP on any of my devices to collect email from mydomain.plus.net, so how do these emails appear in my inbox? Apologies if this is a silly question....

@bathplug

Ok so there's two things in play here:-

1) mailboxes are common between hosted domains and the native <account>.plus.com domain. So for example mail to fred@mydomain.com and fred@<account>.plus.com both go to the same mailbox. So when you access the mailbox fred@mydomain.com you will see emails addressed to both.

2) information emails from Plusnet are sent to the contact address on the account and (where the account has a native Plusnet email facility) postmaster@<account>.plus.com. In your case , I guess your 'myname' mailbox is a catch-all and so you are seeing the 'postmaster' one there as well as the myname@mydomain.com one

@jab1

Point of interest @MisterW My final transfer notification was sent to 'myemaildomain@mydomain.plus.com', even though the contact address on my PN account was an .icloud one.

Was the contact email always an icloud one ?

No, but it was changed when I moved provider, so it had been for at least four years prior. The initial 'we are going to transfer you' notification was sent to it.

I don't know for sure because my account hasnt transferred yet, I have webspace & cgi space so its in the next tranche.

My initial email went to the contact address. The initial email is from Plusnet whereas I guess the final email is from Greenby. Greenby probably dont have access to the contact email address and so send the final email to the default email address
