I received emails from Plusnet some time ago saying they would be closing down their email service and email accounts would be migrated to Greenby, IIRC at the time they said they would all be done by around the end of last year (2025).
I have never received any email saying the migration of my account has been completed, was it hit and miss if the completion emails were sent, or does this mean I just haven't been migrated yet?
I joined Plusnet directly so my address is on the plus.com domain.

I assumed it was all complete, but reading some of the posts on here it's looking like it is still in progress, but this could be just for some other non plus.com domains?

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forums. No, it is not "hit and miss" but rather a somewhat complex cohort by cohort programme of migrations, grouped by the following characteristics (no order implied)...

Email brand (there's around a dozen)

Do not have a current broadband service (legacy email only accounts)

Have telephone service with broadband

Have a hosted domain name

Have a website

Use the ccgi platform

Having any of the last three puts you towards the end of the programme: my account has all of them and it has not yet received a personal notification of the migration window.

Thanks for the info, having not heard anymore about it direct from plusnet I had assumed it had just all happened. But that makes more sense now that the program is still ongoing, I guess mine must still be pending then and I'm in one of the later cohorts as I do have the website and ccgi platform configured.

Have there been any announcements about when these final cohorts will have the migration completed? from what I've seen of some of the other posts on here, it seems like having your email migrated isn't always a good things and sometimes it may be better when it is still with Plusnet.

An added complication is I also have the landline with Plusnet too, and whilst I don't really use it that much I would like to keep the facility there and keep my number. But it seems that Plusnet are not going to be allowed to offer Digital Voice services so anyone wanting to keep it would need to switch to EE. How would this affect my email if I need to move away from Plusnet for broadband before the migration of the email to Greenby? Would my email address get shutdown, or do does Plusnet allow you to keep them, and then I would just get the 30 days at Greenby post migration before having to pay them?

Is there anyway of finding out when my email account is scheduled for migration?

You can stay with PN, move to a SOGEA line (FTTC without the phone) and then port your number to a VOIP provider.

Given your stated phone use A&A, might be worth a look. Bit of work required for VOIP in the beginning but otherwise no issues.

Have there been any announcements about when these final cohorts will have the migration completed? from what I've seen of some of the other posts on here, it seems like having your email migrated isn't always a good things and sometimes it may be better when it is still with Plusnet.

FWIW, my experience and understanding(?), after having been moved from Plusnet to Greenby email, is that there is quite a lot of nonsense posted on here about this!

But it may depend on your existing Plusnet email setup. I had/have a simple single user Plusnet email address and it all works much the same after transfer to Greenby. That's not to say there are no 'issues' with Greenby - mainly that its current operations are a bit erratic, sometimes running slowly. I put this down (rightly or wrongly) to the hosts being slowed down due to the ongoing email transfer operation. Hopefully, when this is eventually completed, things will run more smoothly.

There have been many complaints about Spam and inability to get client based email programs to connect etc. These are all blamed by many on "Greenby!" but, IMO, are more likely to be coincidence (e.g. wrt Spam) and/or misunderstanding (e.g. wrt client software settings).

Other opinions are available. 😁

@Rob_E wrote:

Greenby is free for two years (then paid for) for Plusnet account holders. My understanding is, if you leave Plusnet (and so have your Plusnet account closed) before transfer of email to Greenby, then you would lose your Plusnet email account and emails in the usual way. So best to back them up before you leave.

Thanks, I'd had come across that company, possibly from this forum. They do look like a good option pricing wise to keep hold of the number, as I don't need the unlimited calls that a lot of providers seem to want to bundle with a voip number, which then comes with a correspondingly higher price.

From some other posts though it seems like I have to end the phone service then quickly try and recover the number within 30 days before it is lost.

I feared that might be the case. It would be nice to know when the migration was going to happen. While I have been with Plusnet for a a long time and am happy with the service itself, given I'm in an area where openreach have not got FTTP available it is getting tempting to move to one of the alternative network providers as they do have Full fibre and can over 900mb symmetric connection for practically the same price I'm paying for 70mb down and 18mb up.

You CANNOT start the number port until it's confirmed you are on a SOGEA connection. Then, as you say, you have 30 days to do the necessary.

A&A have a good reputation on here regarding number porting. Your number becomes "ceased" when you go to SOGEA. In days gone past the computer systems of many VOIP providers couldn't handle this so said no. A&A Support staff were always wiling to jump in and do a manual port. Now I believe it's part of the ordering process where you state it's a ceased line.

The phone port on the Hub2 doesn't work so you need an Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) or buy a router which has one built in. Another way of doing it is to set your A&A service to Answer phone where they then send you an email of every message received so you don't need to spean any time or money getting set up. You use you mobile for outgoing calls.

A&A look like a good option, I also need to sort my mum's phone out too. Reading their website I came across this section https://support.aa.net.uk/VoIP_NAT, which is a little worrying as it makes it sound like it would be unlikely to work through NAT, but surely all home broadband connects devices through NAT as there is only one public IP.

So now I'm wondering how likely it would be to work? I was thinking of the Grandstream ATA, have many people on here had success getting this service to work through a NAT router?

Thanks,
Rob

I've used voip for the last 10 years from various suppliers including A & A, Sipgate & Localphone. I've used various different NAT routers and in my experience, providing you disable any SIP ALG and your ATA (or other voip device) supports 'SIP keepalive' then it works.
