My mother's email (I manage much of this stuff for her) has been migrated to Greenby, but now she has BT fairly aggressively "encouraging" her to sign up for BT broadband, which we were expecting, but not yet. What happens with Greenby if we do leave Plusnet and go to straight BT? Does she still get n years free service, or do we have to start paying for it? And if so what notification do we get?

My mother's email (I manage much of this stuff for her) has been migrated to Greenby

@jimchjones so now her email facility is completely separate from Plusnet, Greenby will have no knowledge of whether she remains a Plusnet customer or not. The two years free was applied at the point of migration and will remain applicable

Just to be clear, your mother doesn't have to move to BT unless she's an an ADSL dervice and Full Fibre or SOGEA isn't available.

Depending on her remaining contract length she could move elsewhere.

Thanks,

At the moment she has BT landline which she pays for, and plusnet broadband which I pay for, because i need broadband when I stay there. Its also, and increasingly importantly, used so I can access her PC with Teamviewer for anything that must be done on line.

At her age she doesn't need any unnecessary change, so staying with BT landline is given. So its a question of whether we use BT fibre or Commmunity Fibre for my broadband connection.

Are you referring to which broadband service you will use when at your mothers place?

If so then you can no longer just have a PSTN landline with BT as they are migrating landlines to their digital voice service that runs over BT broadband.

You mentioned staying with BT is a given which means once confirmed she will be signed up to a BT broadband service and her landline number will transfer to the digital voice service run over the BT broadband service. If currently ADSL or FTTC and in a FTTP priority area this will also likely involve FTTP being installed.

In terms of plusnet, as landline is primary for ADSL/FTTC, Plusnet will contact you to say sorry to see you go and we will be closing your plusnet account as another ISP is taking over your broadband services.

Move to BT broadband is still likely the route of least resistance but probably isnt as straight forward as the BT letter I assume you received saying 'you can no longer have seperate landline and broadband providers and contact us within 30 days to arrange to move to BT broadband'

Isn't the answer to talk to BT and see what they can offer you by way of a combined phone and internet connection? You can then decide whether this is adequate for you Internet access requirement. If it is good enough then that will be the easiest option.Internet speed will be no less than you get now.

If you want faster Internet speed then get the minimum BT deal that provides the phone service and get Connect Fibre to bring in a separate FTTP connection. Just don't tell Connect Fibre that there is also a BT phone service or make it very clear that you wish yo retain it.. The last thing you want is to trigger that being automatically cancelled. This will be the most expensive way to do it.

Alternatively, do some smooth talking and move to Connect Fibre including their VoIP phone service, but watch out for BT termination charges.

As I understand it BT no longer do consumer braodband unless it's something like an ADSL line. They may well try and move your mother to EE.

If they do, and you're happy, make sure they move the PlusNet service first so the account doesn't get cancelled when the phone is moved.

Whilst BT might be refusing to take on any new residential customers, my understanding is that due to customer resistance, they have rowed back on the plan to move them all to EE. It seems that the poor past reputation of EE is not restricted to Plusnet customers.

Your mother will be on a legacy account from PN from the days when you could have phone and internet from different providers.

The PN account depends on an active phone line and is controlled using the phone number from that line. If the phone gets cancelled then the PN account will be cancelled as there is no associated phone line for it.
