Are you using POP3 or IMAP to access your emails?

POP3 can re-download stuff on the server if the server has its email index reset.

I have not seen it on IMAP at all.

Does anyone happen to know why I occasionally receive 'dumps' of all my already-received emails from the past year or so? Has happened at least three times now and it's a real hassle having to delete all the junk AGAIN and hunt out the important ones.

POP will only do that if it is set to 'keep on server' indefinitely, which will quickly fill up the 1GB storage - once the messages are downloaded, they should be deleted from the server.

I run POP3 with 6 months of messages left on the server, it is very handy if there is a train wreck or I am forced into webmail.

I've just been through a bit of repair process with Greenby as a number of aspects of the migration has not completed for our account leaving the "VIEW WEBMAIL" button not working and also Greenby Webmail failed to send for any of our accounts.

Yesterday Greenby "re-run the email migration" this has corrected both webmail issues but it is also repopulated our email Inbox(s) with duplicate copies of our messages & this can be seen in both POP3 and IMAP configurations of email clients / apps.

I'm just ignoring the duplicates as over time they will go down the Inbox list and out of view.

That is one of the problems with using POP3. IMAP does not have that problem, and also enables you to see previous emails from whatever client or device you are using.

It is all a choice, POP3 can leave all messages on the server too.

The #1 concern with IMAP is you don't hold a copy of the email history.

i.e. you are dependent on the ISP / Email operator to keep your inbox intact.

Some customers are learning this the hard way when failed migrations to Greenby present an empty IMAP Inbox.

I'm a POP person and my Mac Mail is set to remove messages from the server after a week. Not sure if that helps.
