email migration and domain name query

Hi. I have a domain name originally through Madasafish, plus madasafish email addresses, and one, possibly two emails, linked to my domain name. I really don't use any of them any more, nor do I need the domain name and webspace.
If I fill in the form to opt out of the migration and just put in my plusnet email address will it also remove the domain name, madasafish email accounts, and the other email addresses?

AIUI, @Meggy23 , opting out of the migration will cancel all email addresses - although I am a little confused as to how you have a PN email address if you were initially a MAAF account holder.

Thanks John. I was given a @plusnet email address when I signed up with plusnet when they took over madasafish. I have never used it, but I presume that is the one I should use when opting out?

OK - I wasn't around in MAAF days, but is this notification addressed to your MAAF, or, Plusnet address? The transfer is being done in tranches, so the MAAF addresses are being moved before the PN ones, which suggests to me that you will have addresesses in both.

The notification came to my plusnet address, also to my Gmail as that is the address plusnet contact me on now.

My madasafish emails seem to be still working, but I have not had a notification about them, or about my domain name.

I am old and confused! Thanks for your help.

As I don't work for PN, and I only know what I do from being on here, I can't advise further, I am afraid. The two SU's who are usually around here, and could possibly give more definite information appear to be having a day off, but they may pick this up tomorrow.

Users will receive separate emails for each ACCOUNT for which they have email addresses. Where those emails will go will depend on the contact email specified on those accounts. Sounds as though you have both MAAF and Plusnet accounts, each having an email service.

Neither MAAF or Plusnet email brands have entered into the migration programme yet. Those users who have hosted domain names (and possibly websites) will be at the back end of the migration activity.

If you have received a communication recently in respect of the migration, then that is probably only of the ilk to tell you to change the way you are accessing the service. Some people are (were) not using (the correct) server names, resulting in they connecting to the wrong (old) service interfaces. Other users were also using incorrectly formatted user credentials.

@plusnettony - where users have no desire to retain their legacy email services, would there be merit in they contacting support to request the removal of their email components? Or would it be more convenient just to opt out whenever they are scheduled into the migration programme?

Where doe the opt out link go to? Is it pre-coded? Is in the user portal, requiring a sign-on to access? My mind was turning towards the possibility of being able to offer an immediate self opt out for users such as this one. Could such lighten the migration workload sufficiently to be worth considering?

I've only had one email so far, which mentioned the plusnet email address. None to any of the others as far as I know. So, I presume as the emails arrive I opt out for each one? Presumably I will get an email about the domain too?

My late husband had a couple of email addresses from madasafish and linked to the domain name too. I can't access those as I no longer have the passwords. Obviously they have not been used for several years. So I don't know if any emails to him are floating around out there. I was the account holder with MAAF and am with PN.

I guess giving support a ring is probably the best thing to do? I tried that, but couldn't work out what option to go for!

Now even more confused! 🤪 I am not good at technology, so appreciate all of you for taking time to reply.

@Townman This question may have been asked in other threads, but my email account is due to be transferred to Greenby shortly and the FAQs state "we recommend you back up your emails". Would it be possible to tell me how I do this?

Most email clients have facilities to archive the contents of mail services locally. Look to see if your client has an archive function.

Failing that, you can create local mail folders yourself and copy the contents of folders (inbox and sent items) to them. For example see https://www.lcn.com/support/articles/how-to-archive-imap-messages-in-outlook-2019/

DO NOT follow any advice to use POP3 to do the job. POP3 only accesses the inbox folder not any others you might have created, nor the sent items folder.

@Townman By "client" do you mean Plusnet? I should think all of my folders are on a Plusnet mainframe somewhere. Does Plusnet have an Archive facility that I can use to download the folders?

No, client is the application you use in your device to access emails (other than webmail). Did you read the article I referred you to?

Webmail does have a download feature, which I’ve never used and cannot advise of its effectiveness.

@Townman Sorry, I did look at the link, but it referred to Outlook, which I never use - I always go online to Plusnet (Webmail) to read my emails. Do you happen to know where this download feature lies within Webmail.

It’s behind the cog on the menu bar.

You would be better off using a proper IMAP email client.
