I have been with Plusnet since January 2010 and until June this year I have been very happy with my email service via Classic Outlook ~ though as I’m approaching my mid-eighties then my email requirements are relatively modest.

Having re-read some 56 pages of correspondence on the above topic, I noticed that my Incoming POP Setup had not been ticked against “This server requires an encrypted connection” Nor had the Outgoing SMTP setting been ticked against “My outgoing (SMTP) server requires authentication”

Whilst it is my understanding that the main changes instigated by Microsoft will require resolution at a much higher level, I wondered whether ticking the relevant two boxes might reduce both the bounce back and disappearance of some outgoing messages

In the event, I received the message (in red text)—"Something went wrong and Outlook couldn’t save your account settings” ~ retry ----------- which I did but received the same message.

I also receive a Send/Receive error message (0*800*CCC1A) saying that “your server does not support the connection encryption method you have specified-------”

Could this refer to my 11-year-old Dell OptiPlex 2020 which I’m replacing with a new Dell Tower plus? ~ and, if so, might I then be able to make the amendments recommended by some Superusers?

In conclusion, I do realise that there is a much bigger issue which I hope that Greenby can, perhaps, resolve in the year ahead.

My experience of setting / editing account settings in my Outlook 2016 client is that the safest and most reliable way is to do so by using the 'Mail' applet in ye olde worlde Control Panel, yes, even on Windows 11. Ensure Outlook is not running before you do so though.

The correct settings you should use are the ones here:

https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/

but ensure you do use SMTP authentication, set to 'use same settings as incoming server'.

@Townman please confirm that my above advice is correct so I can edit if it's not.

It is not the hardware which supports this or that, but the email application.

You refer to "Outlook Classic" - which version? Very old versions of Outlook do not support encryption. What OS are you running? That might be of more concern in other areas, such as exposure to virus, malware or hacking risks.

In the context of the thread you piggy-backed on (issues delivering emails to Microsoft addressees) your concerns have minimal direct relevance to that issue.

SMTP authentication is very desirable, arguably it should be mandatory and will will be from later this year

Encryption is optional, though desirable

Setting that on POP3 requires the port to be changed to 995 - TLS/SSL should be chosen

Setting that on SMTP should still work on port 587 with STARTTLS - some clients will not work with that, in which case the obsolete port 465 with TLS/SSL must be used

HTH

EDIT: @stuck - postings crossing!

All essentially correct ... though I did not see reference to a version of Outlook. The advice to use the control panel router to managing outlook settings is immensely valuable. It avoid the "trying to be helpful" characteristics of the application's interference in managing the configuration.

EDIT2: The linked to settings are well dated and not totally accurate (clear). The email settings diagnostics (see the link below) does offer the correct settings and is cited in the Greenby migration FAQs.

Thank you both for the replies which I will now consider carefully.

In the meantime :~

I have been running Outlook via MS Office Professional plus 2019 on a Windows 10 system since early 2020 and the settings have remained unchanged as follows :~

Incoming POP (no mention of 3) -----------mail.plus.net on Port 110

Outgoing mail server ----------------- relay.plus.net on Port 25

None of the options boxes, incoming or outgoing, have ever been ticked . Also, encryption has been marked None, and until around June this year I've had no problems with emails

I have also had various anti virus programmes on the Dell OptiPlex 3020 ~ nothing new this year.

(I used the term "Classic" because I have become aware that there is a new version around)

Thanks again.

You need to update your settings, to meet the more stringent authentication requirements needed these days. For POP use:

Incoming server

mail.plus.net

Incoming port

995

Outgoing server

relay.plus.net

Outgoing port

587

STARTTLS

Yes

SMTP Authentication

Yes

That’s a copy & paste of the less than clear advice on the Plusnet help page. It offers no advice on the correct encryption setting for the inbound server. STARTTLS is not an attribute to be set to Yes or No, but rather it is an attribute value of the encryption attribute.

To save rewriting it in every request, the correct settings are documented on the connection diagnostic topic at the top of this board.

@CSG setting authentication on the outbound server can improve deliverability to some regimes. It will become mandatory later this year.

Encryption is preferred for both servers.
