@Purvez

If I recall correctly I had this message when I sent an email to multiple recipients, Gemini comes up with this.

This error message, "<91.204.208.8> Too many distinct from addresses," indicates that the receiving mail server (at IP address 91.204.208.8) has detected that your email contains too many different "From" addresses within a relatively short period or within a single email batch.

Here's a breakdown of what this means and how to troubleshoot it:

Possible Causes:

Mass Mailing/Spam Prevention: This is a common security measure implemented by mail servers to prevent spammers from sending large volumes of emails using numerous forged or different sender addresses.

Mailing Lists/Group Emails: If you're sending an email to a large mailing list where the sender address is dynamically being changed or if the email is being forwarded through multiple systems that alter the "From" address, this could trigger the error.

Automated Systems/Scripts: If you're using an automated script or system to send emails, ensure it's not inadvertently using a large number of different "From" addresses.

Compromised Account: Although less likely to directly cause this specific error, a compromised account could be used to send spam with varying "From" addresses.

Misconfigured Email Client/Server: In rare cases, a misconfiguration in your email client or outgoing mail server might be causing the "From" address to change unexpectedly.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Identify the Sending Method:

Are you using a desktop email client (e.g., Outlook, Thunderbird)?

Are you using webmail (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo Mail)?

Are you sending through a third-party service or script?

Examine the Email(s) You Were Trying to Send:

How many recipients were there?

Did the "From" address change for each recipient or within the email batch?

Are you using any features that might dynamically alter the "From" address (e.g., "Send As" aliases used excessively)?

Check Your Email Client/Webmail Settings:

Verify the "From" address you are using is consistent.

If you have multiple "Send As" aliases configured, ensure you are not inadvertently using too many of them in a short period.

Investigate Any Automated Systems or Scripts:

Review the code or configuration of any scripts or applications sending emails.

Ensure they are using a consistent "From" address or are configured to respect the receiving server's limits.

Contact Your Email Service Provider (ESP) or Mail Server Administrator:

Explain the error message and the context in which it occurred.

They might be able to provide more specific information about their sending limits and help identify the cause.

If you are running your own mail server, check its logs for more detailed information.

Reduce the Number of Distinct "From" Addresses:

If you are sending to a large list, try to standardize the "From" address used.

Avoid dynamically changing the "From" address for each recipient.

Consider Sending in Smaller Batches:

If you need to send a large volume of emails, try breaking it down into smaller batches with a consistent "From" address for each batch.

In summary, the "Too many distinct from addresses" error is a security measure to prevent spam. You need to investigate why your email sending process is using multiple different sender addresses and take steps to consolidate them or reduce their frequency to comply with the receiving server's policies.

I have an old free-online email address which I've been using for decades. Thunderbird has been downloading messages from my email account at free-online until 2 days ago. Now I get the message 'Host contacted. Sending login information '. This stays on there for almost 1 minute and then disappears without any error messages and nothing is downloaded.

I can see emails exist via Webmail. I spoke to Plusnet yesterday and they said if I could login via webmail then that proved that everything was working ok at their end. They did not support any Email Clients and therefore couldn't help further.

I have Gmail accounts set up on the same Thunderbird client and both of those connect and download without issues.

The lady who I spoke to yesterday said that they were moving email services to Greenbee over the next few months. I'm wondering if as part of that preparation the emails have stopped downloading.

I would like to know if anyone else is having similar issues and if there is a resolution that someone would be able to provide.

Thanks

@Purvez I have seen numerous ex-'free-online' customers with similar issues, which, although there has been no official announcement, seems to be associated with PN 'rationalising' email platforms. Hopefully, the right people will pick this up, but as it is the weekend, don't expect a rapid response.

As to 'moving email services to Greenbee' - that is confusing, as I understand that was the platform the now-defunct John Lewis Broadband used for their email provision.

We need some clarity here.

@Purvez welcome to the forum

Are you on or off plusnet work?

I use both Thunderbird and Outlook 365

These are the settings I use for IMAP

Incoming - imap.free-online.net port 993 encryption SSL/TLS

Outgoing - relay.free-online.net port 587 encryption STARTTLS

If you client does not support STARTTLS use port 465 and SSL/TLS

For POP incoming - mail.free-online.net port 995 encryption SSL/TLS

Username (authentication) configured on BOTH incoming and outgoing servers
Default mailbox accountname
Secondary mailbox accountname+mailboxname

Not sure the story about moving is Greenbee is accurate, but I suspect there maybe some truth in the mail services moving.

EDIT: the mail service moving would be for all not just free-online

Connected to my on going work to redefine email server connection issues testing, here are some useful diagnostics...

Brand: Free-Online - encryption supported: Yes

IMAP: imap.free-online.net port: 993
curl.exe -v imaps://imap.free-online.net -u userID:password

POP3: mail.free-online.net port: 995
curl.exe -v pop3s://mail.free-online.net -u userID:password

SMTP: relay.free-online.net port: 587
curl.exe -v smtp://relay.free-online.net:587 -u userID:password --ssl-reqd

The above cURL commands should be copied and pasted into a terminal / CMD window. Modify the command to user your email account userID and password. This should deliver a go / no-go connectivity report.

Only paste the end of the output if you share any of it. Some of the outputs include your public IP address and your encrypted userID and password ... which are readily de-crypted.

Ok here's the full cURL command for POP with output. I've only blanked out the User and Password details. Both of which ARE correct as I use them in Webmail which works.

You cannot use the inbound servers without authentication.

Did you mean without encryption?

The diagnostics I am drafting will use the best available options for the brand; offering pre-built commands for all options is not viable.

Ref screen shot - Server is .NET not .co.uk

As Dan suggests, try the not encrypted option. The negotiation error is odd.

On a successful connection (to Plusnet on POP3), following the > PASS response I see...

<LI-CODE lang="markup">< +OK logged in.
> LIST
< +OK POP3 clients that break here, they violate STD53.
1 1526
2 27126
3 2207</LI-CODE>

... up to item 3283.

Please try the IMAP diagnostic.
