Thanks Dan...

Sorry, this must be frustrating for you as I'm obviously being thick...

So if, hypothetically my email was liz@crabby1.force9.co.uk

I should be setting my username to

crabby1.force9.co.uk+liz

Thanks!!!!

Hello,

I'm retiring my Win 95 laptop and "upgrading" to a Win 10 machine.

I've got used to using Microsoft mail with my old .force9 email address.

I've tried to import my email settings to the "new" Win 10 machine but cannot get "Mail" to work.

At first it seems to work, with my email address listed but then it says " we couldn't access this account : Force 9. You might need to update your password or give the account permission to sync to this device"

I have checked that my password is correct, but don't know how to "give the account permission to sync to this device".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Liz

I suggest firstly using web mail with the Plusnet provided mail.

Then try and get it working with the Microsoft "Mail" programme.

I assume the old laptop still works and gets your mail.

I also suspect the mail is stored on the old laptop (otherwise the Plusnet provided account woud probably have got full). That suggests you might be using POP3 rather than IMAP

This might also be helpful:

https://community.plus.net/t5/Email/Gmail-Force9/td-p/1914441

In the longer term, assuming you have a Microsoft account for your Windows 10 machine (it's possible not to but there is a strong push towards it) you probably have email available with that account.

Moving email away from your Force 9 address would be a bit painful but a Microsoft account will probably be better than the Plusnet email.

I think it's the mail programme's response to not being able to sync with the Plusnet mail server.

Good morning.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I can confirm that is it not a One drive issue, as I have not signed in on the older computer, unless it is a setting on the newer machine blocking access. or something in Outlook that requires it being set up?

I am able to access the emails on the new machine via plusnet "web mail" so I know that the password is correct. When I do access via this route the email address, in the top right hand corner. is different (but similar) to my email address (asterixis added by me):

Current mailbox: c***g1@c***g1.f9.co.uk

I've tried various versions of this in the outlook advanced setting options but to no avail. I've tried to follow the guidance here How to set up Plusnet email | Help | Plusnet.for both POP and IMAP. I have tried various iterations of the incoming/outgoing server name and ports. Nothing seems to work!

This is more probably related to the "new outlook" mail application being an utter pig to configure - it presumes far too much and is less than obvious how to correct. See the many similar posts on this board for detailed guidance.

A pragmatic solution is to use Thunderbird instead.

If your old laptop was configured to use POP3 ... what is your plan to migrate your existing email stored only on that device? These days POP3 is somewhat far inferior that using IMAP conjoined with an archiving policy wholly in your control.

Placing the 'local' email files in OneDrive space has some merits in that when changing devices, those files are in the right place to be picked up again with minimal effort.

Thanks for the response.

As I can see my emails on the "webmail" page does this not mean that they are being stored on the cloud somewhere?

I will try the Thunderbird app, but would like one more go at the "old" outlook settings. Would someone please be able to check if the attached seems correct.

Many thanks

Not so much "in the cloud" as on the mail server.

Those settings are inconsistent.

Incoming - port 993 is encrypted and thus incoming should have SSL ticked.

Outgoing - should be port 587 not 25

Out going should be requires logon

This form of specifying the configuration <server>:<port>:<who knows what> is very much part of the challenge of using "new" outlook. It is quite different to everything else.

Historically Plusnet's servers required either

<username> for the default mailbox

<username>+<mailbox-name> for a secondary mailbox

as the user ID.

Somewhere along the way me@myaccount.plus.com became valid.

Where one has a hosted domain, for example me@mydomain.me.uk it is less than clear that it is possible to use "new" outlook to connect to the servicers, as that client PRESUMES that the service userID is the same as the email address. That is not necessarily so!

Thanks again - I've tried that reconfiguration without success.

One thing that is odd is that it keeps resetting my password to what I think is my plusnet account, rather than my force9 email password.

Any thoughts on this?

Failing all this, is it straightforward to set up a system to automatically forward my old force9 email to a new plusnet email account?

OK. thanks. so there is no solution to this? My force9 email is obsolete (unless I use webmail?).

I presume as Plusnet now own Force9, this I would need to take this up with them directly?

so

Thanks Dan...

Sorry, this must be frustrating for you as I'm obviously being thick...

So if, hypothetically my email was liz@crabby1.force9.co.uk

I should be setting my username to

crabby1.force9.co.uk+liz

Thanks!!!!
