This is not a new "characteristic". iOS mail has a reputation for messing up its profile - it does not need an OS upgrade for that to happen. Sometimes it is necessary to delete the account and recreate it, which is not an issue if it is an IMAP client.

My iOS 18.x.x upgrades (at least two) have not given rise to issues.

Good to know that a reboot fixed it for you.

Email fine until yesterday.
No emails downloaded today.
Webmail shows several emails received today including the test I sent a few minutes ago from another address.
The iPad ipadOS18 app starts "checking for emails" with the spinning wheel turning runs for a minute and stops with nothing downloaded.

No settings chaned.

Any suggestions?

After a lot of fruitless research on the'net I may have sorted the problems myself.
The iPad/Mail app was the problem. Apparently, the latest OS messed up the app! Eventually I rebooted the tablet.
In case anyone else has a similar problem with ipadOS/18, the following was my approach:-
1. Close the app - didn't work.
2. Reboot. Press and long hold power button and Vol down buttons simultaneously until the power slider appears & slide.
3. After a few seconds press the power button.
If you are lucky the app will start working again but it may redownload everything on the server.

@Townman Many faults on Apple devices can be fixed by a full reboot, in fact, when I've had issues, thankfully very few, that is my default remedy, which usually works.

My 18.x.x upgrades have also not given me any issues either.
