The big names use bespoke means to access email services leaving IMAP (or POP3 if you must) as the norm for the majority of providers. It is not wise to use a mixture of POP3 and IMAP clients to access the same mailbox. If there is more than one client (as here) life is simpler using only IMAP everywhere.

Email programs will try to guess the server settings based on the email address, which tends to lead to wrong configurations. They should be as follows:

Inbound IMAP - imap.plus.net port 993 encryption TLS/SSL

Outbound SMTP - relay.plus.net port 587 encryption STARTTLS

Username…

If it is the default email account just use the Plusnet account name

If it’s a secondary email account use

Accountname+mailboxname

Each with the appropriate password

This sounds ridiculously basic for which I apologise. I have had a pop account on Outlook for years, I now want to set up an imap account in (New) Outlook 365 on both a second laptop and on a tablet. Nothing works. I've been following the help steps and filling in the 'advanced' info for servers etc but I always get 'something's gone wrong'. A couple of example questions: Plusnet is not included in the list of providers so I put IMAP - is that right? And for username is it the whole email or the bit after the '@.' (in my case just my name, lowercase, no spaces. The password I use is the one I use to retrieve webmail.

Just a couple of examples, I suspect there's something far more basic wrong.

Look up on this forum how to set up Outlook; you must enter the appropriate details manually; never accept suggested entries. IMAP is not a provider, but an e mail protocol, like POP3.

Hi Gel, thanks for the post. I'm not (ever) using suggested entries, just the ones in the Plusnet guides. I understand that IMAP is a protocol but what else can I put in when I'm asked for a provider and PLusnet is not an option?
