It probably means that at sometime in the past it was MARKED for deletion but the move to the trash folder failed. Compacting the mailbox will expunge items marked as deleted, but not moved to the trash folder.

I have been doing some long overdue message/mailbox management with the Plusnet webmail system.

What does it mean if an old email message is greyed out and has a national speed limit sign '⊘' next to the 'From' field? It doesn't have any obvious effect on the messages, which are still readable, moveable and can be deleted.

Thanks for the suggestion, Townman.

Yet another interesting observation...

If I delete recent messages they are moved to the 'Deleted Items' mailbox. Where they stay, until I delete them from there. If I delete old messages (from last year) they are similarly moved to the 'Deleted Items' mailbox. Where they seem to be automatically deleted after some hours.

<LI-WRAPPER></LI-WRAPPER>

There are various mechanisms in play here...

Plusnet house keeping each week deletes anything in the Deleted items folder which was deleted more than 8 days previously (IIRC Plusnet mailboxes ae processed Sunday evening)

Email clients have options for managing (purging) deleted items (moved or not) on switching folders

Email clients have options to empty the deleted items folder on exiting

Webmail has a similar collection of tools

So there are a number of avenues to the experience you describe.
