Trying to set up POP3 account in Outlook instead of SMTP getting message "send test email message An unknown error occurred error code 0x800cc81 Any ideas?

I don't quite get what you mean POP3 is a mail type, SMTP is a transfer protocol.

What settings do you have on the account - the correct ones are available here: https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/

Or to put it slightly differently - POP3 is inbound and SMTP is outbound.

There are many versions of Outlook. Which are you trying to set up? I use the version that is bundled with Office 2019 and always use the advanced manual settings.
