@elkieluca

I think that I know what is happening here: I suspect that Thunderbird is trying to be helpful by starting the process of setting up your email. I find helpful programs deeply annoying! It is offering something that you don't want it to do - clearly - as you had a previous installation.

If you are getting these messages when you try to run (your reinstalled) Thunderbird then - good news - you have solved most of your problems. There is just one more thing to do. If I'm right, what is happening is that Thunderbird has created a new profile. You need to copy the old one over the new.

You profile is in c: > users > [your name] > Appdata > Roaming > Thunderbird > Profiles Just click through each step individually until you get there. When you get there you will see several folders with random names. At least one will be old - that will be your previous profile (which you backed up before doing all this?) and one the new one that Thunderbird just created.

Have a look in each of them and make sure that you know which is the old and which the new; the date stamps will help with this.

Just to be on the safe side, make a copy of what you think is the old profile and a copy of what you think is the new profile.

With Thunderbird closed, copy everything in the old profile into the new profile. And try restarting Thunderbird again.

Let us know how you get on please

Uninstalling Chrome browser on your computer will not affect any apps/programs installed on your other devices, your Thunderbird emails are stored on a web server.

From what I can gather, the XPCOM error you’re seeing can happen when a failed browser update occurs, this leaves a mixture of old and updated files in the browser program folder.

It can be caused when security software is keeping a handle of some of the files stored in the browser program folder preventing the files from updating.

This issue would normally be fixed with a clean browser reinstall that also involves deleting the existing browser program folder.

I’m don’t use Google Chrome myself but I believe the 64-bit installation of Google Chrome on a Windows device is C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\.

Please note:- you will need to delete this folder before you reinstall Chrome….

If you decide to delete Chrome do so via Add/Remove programs, delete the folder afterwards.

Chrome would only be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\ if you using the 32bit version, 64bit should be in

C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\

@elkieluca

You might want to google "thunderbird xpcom". What I'm seeing when I do so are reports that this error is caused by a failed Thunderbird update. Nothing to do with Firefox or Chrome; leave them alone.

The solution offered here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1130596 is to uninstall Thunderbird and then re-install it.

Thunderbird files are in 2 places on your disc: the program files & what is called the profile. The profile contains instructions to the Thunderbird program on how to pick up your email, and stores the emails etc. that you have downloaded on the Windows machine. Uninstalling Thunderbird using the Windows command does not (well, should not) remove the profile. But, just in case, back it up first; instructions are in the link.

Uninstalling from your Windows box will not affect the installation on your iPad or the way it operates..

It is possible that once you have re-installed, that Thunderbird will create a new profile for itself. Have a look at the profile bit of your disc. If that happens, exit Thunderbird and just copy the contents of the old profile into the new one.

Yeah I was probably wrong to suggest a browser fix, when the op mentioned Chrome I wrongly assumed a browser addon/extension was being used similar to Firefox online interface. To compound my mistake the fix I found for XPCOM error was written by someone using the addon interface https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/thunderbird-online-email/

BrightonRock was probably spot on with his/her suggestion....

@RobDickson wrote:

When you access an email account via web mail, the messages remain on the supplier’s servers until you manually remove them, uninstalling/reinstalling a browser will have no effect on the existing stored messages.

@elkieluca What are you trying to install Thunderbird on? What is asking for a password - it won't be Thunderbird, as that is merely an installation package.
