I'm getting a very nasty feeling that there is some sort of disagreement between the moderators and Plusnet about this restructure. In the past Plusnet have made a big thing of how the forums are the users forums and we have a big say in how they are run including them being moderated by users, not Plusnet staff.
There was a big blow up in October 2008 when Ian Wild overstepped the mark and started modifying the titles of topics in the Web Hosting (including PAYH) forum to reflect which platform the topic related to, and while it was a perfectly good idea, he did not have the authority to take the action he did. Some quotes from that topic:

Quote from: Ian

I (we) believe as strongly today that the communtity should be running these forums as we (you) always have. I just hope the next mod recruitment exercise will result in some more willing volunteers, cause anything I reckon we would do is simply because those guys have been a little thin on the ground recently at times.

Quote from: Ian

Hi Guys,
My access has been restored (I didn't just get my admin removed, the login went as well - thanks Kelly ) and while I wanted to exercise my right to reply I think this has been a really great thread and I should probably just want to leave it with my lesson learnt and feeling a bit silly.
That said...
Just for the record on the subject line thing that I had asked the mods at lunchtime on that day to tag the subjects, as we were just sending the newsletter and I felt it was very confusing as it was, especially as the newsletter had a link straight to that forum. Everyone from the mods team was clearly busy and by the evening they hadn't come back to me, so I decided to do it myself to see how it looked and try to stop any confusion spreading. I absolutely shouldn't have done that without at least putting a note on the posts and I agree that it's wrong for staff to get involved in such things anyway.
What I do hope is that in the future, if there are more mod elections, that people will feel they can stick their hand up and get involved in the running of the forums - without you lot there isn't a community, and it can be a very thankless task running these boards. I think this highlights why having enough responsive mods is important, even though that's really only a silver lining on a bit of a cloud for me.
Ian

It was clearly established that the users through the moderators have prime responsibility for how these forums are run, but with Plusnet having a veto if something was unacceptable.
I posted to that thread a quote from the FAQ published to the Community blog when the Community site and forums was launched. It bears repeating - I've emphasised the relevant part:

Quote

- What is the Moderation Policy on the community site?
Our existing moderators have kindly agreed to continue moderating the forums, using the same policies as applied on the Portal Forums. You can find these rules posted in the forums. The moderation policies may change over time, but as with any decisions like this it will be left to the moderators to decide how the forums are moderated. PlusNet goes to great pains not to interfere with the day to day of the forums and it’s important to us that the community site is run by the community even though it is provided by PlusNet.

Has this policy now changed? I sincerely hope not!

A reminder of the rules :

Quote

The forums are moderated by customers, namely; Roger (Chemical Brother), Barry Zubel (Barry), Jim (Oldjim) Adie (Adiewoo) and Jan (Samuria). The moderators are not paid and volunteer their time freely. They do not get any special insight into what Plusnet are doing or when your ticket is going to be answered.

This is not true for the Plusnet Usergroup boards. So i suggest that they are either removed and hosted by the Usergroup or that they are only moderated by elected members. If time is taken to draw rules up they should be kept to.

Is the order you have listed the sub-forums in significant - if so I don't like it!
Will you be prohibiting posts in the Community forum and only allow posting in the tree sub-forums.
I agree with scrapping the separate Testimonials and Rants and Raves sub-forums as they were mis-used nearly as often as they were correctly used. But why not have a sub-forum "Service feedback" for any comments on the service as opposed to the Plusnet Product set?

My instinct is that there'll be too few topics about 'ham radio' to warrant having its own dedicated sub-forum, and that a sub-forum which includes discussions on 'WiFi' will confuse people when, for example, they need to ask about WiFi adaptors - as both the 'wireless' and 'hardware' sub-forums would seem suitable. Bearing in mind that this forum's search is useless, I think we need to make it as easy to find things as possible, and in this case, I feel that bungling all wireless-related stuff in to 'hardware' is the best way forward. After all, neither the current 'hardware' or 'wireless broadband' forums see particularly heavy use.
afoxisevil - I suspect it's because individual sub-forums for Mac and *unix would see very little use - even the current combined forum is rarely posted in.

The order in which the boards are listed is important if you want them to be used correctly, along with a sufficient description. This was one reason the Rants and Raves board didn't get used correctly, it should only have been for 'Long Outstanding problems that were not being resolved' and I think such a board still needs to exist.
I keep forgetting to look at the Internet Event Calendar because it's tucked away at the bottom of Community Support, it might have been better grouped with Product/Service Announcements (which never got used in a way I would have imagined) which is also where Product Feedback & Suggestions should go.
I'd like to give this some more thought - I'll post in a day or two.

How about a more sensible name - like "serious complaints"
Anyone who has a serious problem isn't going to be amused by jokey names like "rants 'n' raves"

Is this where I post a suggested addition?
I would like to see a thread something like "Service fault reporting". With a few main sub-sections plus an 'Other'.
If you are pretty sure there is a service fault - e.g. email down, ccgi server down etc. - you can visit the forum and see whether others are experiencing it.
The RSS feeds always seem to wait for an hour or two, as do the System Status pages. I end up ringing CS and they say 'yes we are aware of the problem'. We, however, are not.
At least this way you could see that other people have written a 'me too' post and you can quickly add your own.
Any ideas? Feel free to rubbish the idea. However, please don't say that people can already report faults under the relevant forum since it is not always easy to know which forum is the relevant one. For example, right now the 'General support' forum contains a 'Can't connect' and an 'Unable to send/receive mail all day' as the first 2 items.
Tony
Tony

Tony,
That is a valid point however there is one problem - for the moderators - which is that the majority of such reports turn out to be not service faults but something else and we would need to move them to the relevant forum.
