They won't change to read unless they are opened either

It does seem a bit silly but it isn't a major issue to select 'Mark all as read'.

The unread count is number of recipients who haven't read your PM.

At least some of rthem must have been read as they have been answerd

I just tried opening a couple of them and the unread count hasn't changed

It doesn't matter if you open them, it's the recipient opening them that will lower the count.
It's like a confirmation that the message you have sent has been read by the recipient.

When I look at my sent PMs, some of them have bold titles and others normal. I assume the ones with bold titles are the ones not read by the recipient.

Checking our case portal with Lithium, this bug with the counter has been fixed in a software update which will be coming out at some point soon (I havent received the details of when this will happen yet).

This issue has been fixed in the recent software update. Sent message counter now displays the correct amount of sent items.
