I have a contract that says between 50-80mb however im not sure how long its been going on but its actually 47-39mb... It is now consistently at this speed it looks like a typical case of throttling.. How much compo should I request as I do not know how log its been going on... My partner has been moaning for ages about my speed ...but that said she does moan a lot so I didn't take much notice... However i've done a speed test and it is slow.... Anyone else had same experience.

Speeds in the 39-47Mbps range suggest using Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band.

Use the BT Broadband Availability Checker to see what range of speeds Openreach thinks your line should achieve.

Can you take a screenshot of the table of results but being careful not to include your phone number or address at the top, and then use the <Insert Photos> button in the forum editor to include the screenshot in your reply here.

Can you also take a screenshot of your router's broadband line statistics including sync speeds, SNR, attenuation, etc - but again blurring out your connection login name. Then post that in your reply here.

These two things will give an idea to whether you have a broadband problem or a WiFi problem,

and whether you have any option to upgrade to full fibre at a higher speed.

Dont have any option it goes from fibre to copper into the house. maximum is 80mb.... My speed is actually 39mb.... It always been between 50-80mb... ive had this contract 10yrs...All of a sudden its now 39mb....41 is the best for 3 days... ..I have a contract saying minimum 50gb I would receive. Im ethernet to my PC and all my TVs in the house.. I do the speed test on a hard wired PC. Ive disabled 5ghz I dont sync with 2.4

A Speedtest result of 41, when your modem line sync has only achieved 47, would be pretty normal. It sounds like there’s something up with your modem’s copper connection.

See if you can log into your modem, and find the advanced settings or (in the PlusNet hub system) the help desk support screen which includes a whole lot of readings. Screenshot / copy out the full DSL statistics which should include the SNR signal to noise ration for the line. Redact anything personal like your PlusNet account login name. It’s possible your full stats might reveal some fault on your analogue circuit which needs reporting to PlusNet for Openreach to resolve.

I suspect your contract might actually say "estimated speed 50-80"

In the sense of an artificial restriction on the speed you receive ("throttling") that isn't happening.

The key question is what your contractual minimum download speed is.

Once you compare that to actual speed tests (with nothing else using the connection) a sensible discussion can start.

There are "physical" limitations on connection speeds using copper delivered circuits and one key factor is the condition of the copper pair (which degrades over time), another is crosstalk from other users which (perhaps due to increasing usage) seems to get worse over time.

When I had a copper (VDSL) circuit it started at around 70Mb/s download speed but in less than a decade that decreased to a bit over 50Mb/s. Fortunately in my case, full fibre arrived so that problem has gone away.

If there is an identifiable fault with the line, it should be possible to get it fixed. If it's just less good than it was then there isn't any fix until full fibre comes along.

That is not the contracted guaranteed speed. If you read your contract again it should quote a Minimum Guaranteed Access Line Speed (MGALS}. That is the figure that’s relevant.

As you can't get "WBC FTTP" (full fibre) from Openreach,

have you checked whether you can get FTTH from an AltNet (non-Openreach) full fibre network at your address ?

If you don't know how to do this, then tell us your postcode and I'll take a look to see if anything is available in your area.

There's only about 25 houses in our street they said that they're not going to put full fibre in as there's not enough people. In my contract that I just read it says a speed of 50-70mb I spoke about this before agreeing. It also states that there is a guaranteed speed of 50mb ,... which i'm not getting.... I've contacted them and they have identified a fault today but I'm not sure how long this fault has been going on... Getting unhappy with PN I've just started a new contract in April but unhappy so far as its actually slower instead of being around 65mb its dropped to 55mb (thats when everything seemed to be working normally) So they're gradually dropping the speed. Time to start looking and close this account I think...Definitely not happy with the 40mb im getting at the moment.

PN are not throttling your speed - you will be getting what the line can provide. At this moment, changing provider won't make any difference - you'll still be on the same line from OpenReach.

What does the OR page say for your address - www.openreach.co.uk

Thanks Phil..yes I came to that conclusion years ago.... However If I was getting 70mb in 2024.... and now lucky to get 50mb with plusnet maybe OReach are cutting the margins for their lines so PN are having to degrade them...Just a thought... If I can get an agreement from say BT to get back up to 70mb then Ill swap. Here is my contract from 2024 and now 2026

If you posted here a screenshot of your router's line stats (as asked for above), you would have a publicly visible record of how your broadband is performing today, so you would have evidence to show later if the speeds continue to get worse, or show the improvement if Plusnet get Openreach to repair the fault they claim exists.

By seeing the full line stats for the copper line, we should be able to diagnose what problems are currently occurring.

At the moment we have no idea whether your line has a real fault, or whether the speed has been banded to a slower speed due to a transient noise event (such as lightning or other electrically noisy event perhaps from a vehicle)

PN do not throttle speed or cap bandwidth - they pay a fixed price for a line.

What does the OR website say for your address?

No, I saw similar performance drops over the years, it's the copper cables degrading (water ingress etc.) and crosstalk from other users of the copper cable.

There isn't some "magic fix" that can be done to make yours better although it sounds like some fault has been found.

I had a line fault a while back (cause unknown but I wonder if it was tree related) and they gave me a different copper pair for some of the run. That fixed it for the remainder of the time I was on copper.

This is one of the reasons Openreach is moving to full fibre but it takes time.

Open Reach said there wasn't enough houses....so they're not putting full fibre in....Theyre swapping my router they think its that ..we'll see

I highly doubt that there is anything wrong with your router, I expect the replacement Hub Two will perform exactly the same.

Instead of waiting to perform this waste of time router swap, you'd be better off providing this forum with the information that we've requested - so we can use our collective knowledge to figure out what your real problem is regarding low speeds.

We are now at 20 posts in this topic, and have made no progress in finding an answer due to the lack of information.
