Slow ADSL Connection

Hello,

Could someone tell me which department I need to contact in order to obtain my average download speed over the past few months.

At the start of my contract it was stated that 5.50 Mbps would be my minimum guaranteed speed, but I have been getting between 2 and 3 Mbps for the last few months, now.

Two engineers have failed to fix the problem, so I feel that I have a valid reason to terminate my contract without paying any early termination charges.

Via Openreach we are also an ADSL only street, however the OR Fibre build has reached the junction with our street.

If ADSL is the only broadband available then you may struggle to find another ISP to move to - not many ISPs offer it, and since it is provided by Openreach other ISPs won't be able to improve the speed from what you have now.

If Openreach SoGEA or FTTP is available then you could move to that with Plusnet. Otherwise you need to check for altnets or 4G/5G coverage (and if available, then push to end your Pluenet contract).

@Xanadu_2 From previous posts it was confirmed that you have Openreach FTTP available and it is a fibre priority exchange. What I don't understand is why you are still on poorly performing ADSL which is very soon going to disappear. If you terminate your Plusnet contract what do you intend to do, you can only order FTTP so why not upgrade to FTTP with Plusnet?

I've been weighing up the pros and cons of fibre vs. 4G LTE.

Fibre : I don't like being locked into a two year contract with guaranteed price increases every year.

4G : A rolling monthly contract that can be cancelled at the end of the month. Freedom to swap to another provider quickly if I see a special low cost offer. A contract which is currently £5.50 per month cheaper than I am paying now.

4G is looking quite promising and I'm just waiting for my router to arrive so I can begin testing.

At this stage I just need to speak to the correct department to make sure that we are both on the same page regarding the speed figures, then I will request a cancellation. So, would that be Customer Retentions, or the Tech' Team?

@Xanadu_2 if you can get a decent speed from a 4G connection that may be OK for you, personally I would never rely on a mobile internet connection even if I had a good signal which I don't in my present location. Too many things can affect the signal, my signal varies from 4 bars to no service very rapidly, no use for internet. If you have a reliable mobile signal it may work for you.

It is easy enough to get an Idea what 4G / GSM would mean by enabling a hot spot on your mobile phone and seeing how you get on with using that for a few days as your internet connection for Zoom calls and Netflix films.

A fibre connection need not be ultra fast to be very stable and more rapid than ADSL or 4G.
If you can survive on ADSL, then FTTP at say 150/30 Mbps would be so much more than plenty.

If you are in a rental property I too would avoid a 2 year contract with hefty early termination fees.

My 4G TP-Link router arrived on Saturday and first tests are promising.

I'm more than happy with these speeds.

I'm using a Smarty SIM which uses the VodafoneThree network.
