Hi. I'm looking to swap from virgin to Plusnet. Is it possible to have the router location moved from the bedroom to the living room when I do the swap? I live in an upstairs maisonette so not sure how possible this is.
Is it also something that can be done free of charge when I do the change over?
Thanks in advance

Matt

Are you moving from Virgin Full Fibre to PN or is this a completely new install?

In relation to your original question with Full Fibre the Router is connected via ethernet cable so can go any where you're happy to run said cable.

Yeah it will be from virgin full fibre.
I think it might be too far to run a cable. I'll look into it though.
Thank you for your help.

@Hubbard84

So, you already have an ONT (Optical Network Terminator) installed so the change to PN will be purely a software change.

If you're not happy running ethernet cable you could get somebody in to do it for you. Not the cheapest option but might be worth while.

Is there a specific reason you want to move the router?

Brian

Edit : Just a thought - it is the OR network that Virgin is using and not their own one?

@Hubbard84 Also, don't get lured into overkill on the cable. Cat5e is absolutely fine for the gigabit speed you need. A higher spec (e.g. Cat6) will just cost more, be thicker/stiffer and be more difficult to route.

And to be honest, in a domestic situation, even older Cat5 cable (if you have some) will probably work absolutely fine at Gigabit speeds.
