If your broadband connection uses a copper phone line (ADSL or VDSL) you will require a modem between the phone socket and any router only devices WAN port.

Which router did you purchase?

I am a little confused and getting elderly. My contract does not run out until the summer. I have fibre to cabinet. Openreach have no plans up to 2027 to install full fibre in this area. Was wondering if, after 2025, when the landline phones end, I can still receive broadband via copper from the cabinet as now? The only full fibre installed in this block of flats is Virgin who I do not wish to be with.

The copper line from the cabinet to your property will remain in place and use. Internet will be supplied over this using an OpenReach product called SOGEA.

It's the phone service (PSTN) which is going. If you use your phone and want to retain a service (and your number) you'll need to "port" it to a VOIP provider.

I have successfully reconnected a plusnet type 1 router to ADSL via phone jack at both ends. Working fine.

I had wanted to connect from phone point to router WAN broadband input port via a RJ11 to RJ45 cable which I have purchased (Rhino cables) but that doesn't connect internet signal. Why not connecting? What to do?

Help please.

R

@banduser , the ADSL signal that comes in through the phone line is a different type of signal to ethernet which is what the WAN port uses. Connecting the ADSL signal to the ethernet WAN port won't work, and could cause damage!

As Dan mentioned, the ADSL signal has to be converted using a modem - many routers include a modem, which has the RJ11 socket for the phone wire. If you have a router which does not have a builtin modem, then you need a stand-alone moden to go between the phone socket and the WAN socket - that will convert the ADSL signal into ethernet.

You say you have a Plusnet router - why do you want to use the WAN connection instead of the RJ11?

Thanks for the clarications. I have indeed now installed a Plusnet modem router and all is working fine. I am now left with the tp-link ethernet only unit which I have held too long to return purchase. I could use it to upgrade another ADSL setup I have but would need to identify and acquire the intermediation modem.

Or just write this off as a lesson learned.

Thanks for the advice.

If you are using a Hub Two it is possible to use it in 'bridge mode' (modem only) so if you wanted to use the TP-Link router it is possible.

You would need to configure the router WAN port for a PPPoE connection using your broadband username and password with NO VLAN tag. If your not sure post the TP-Link router model for further help

Edit: Hub two LAN port 1,2 or 3 to TP-Link WAN port
