New Plusnet customer: I can get WiFi calling, but every website shows err_connection_close

I recently signed up to Plusnet and setup the router. I can get Wifi Calling fine on my phone, but everywebsite I goes to displays "unexpectedly closed the connection. err_connection_close"

I dont understand it. Like I say, Wifi calling is fine, but I cant browse the internet on my phone or my laptop.

Any ideas?

Which router do you have - the Hub2?

Your comment 'can't browse the internet' does not make sense - you must be able to, to post here.

Sorry, back on my neighbours wifi again...

I was fiddling about with this last night. Something very odd is happening:

My phone and laptop says its connected to the new plusnet connection fine. I can make Wifi calls on my phone, but whenever I visit a website it says 'err_connection_close'.

The even weirder thing is that Youtube works! And Google works! But everytime I click on a google result, the subsequent website displays 'err_connection_close'! This happens on both the laptop and 2 mobile phones.

Things I have tried:

- reset router/restart router

- flush the DNS cache on my laptop

- gone into Network Connections (on my laptop) > Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > “Obtain an IP address automatically” is selected and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is selected.

Its very odd that I can connect to Youtube and Google fine - across all devices - yet no other website works!

What do you think?

So - you can make calls on your phone, understandable as phone calls rely on the phone masts for the signal, not you internet connection.

If you can connect to YT/Google , then my initial thought that your circuit was somehow misconfigured is wrong, but why other sites give that message, I do not know.

I think I'll tag a couple of more experienced/cleverer people.

Thanks @jab1 for your input so far.

I live out in the sticks, so no phone coverage. This is why Im sure the calls are being handled over wifi.

Its so odd that Google/YT work fine - across all devices - but no other website does. Its almost as if all ip addresses have been blocked on the router apart from Google/YT.

As I say, the router was only setup a few days ago.

Sounds like a browser issue to me. What browser are you using ? and can you try a different one on the laptop perhaps ?

Yes, I thought it may be a browser (although doesnt explain why its also affecting phones).

Ive tried Brave, Chrome and Firefox. Im stumped!

@cobb1es - try a factory reset of the Hub Two by inserting something into the pinhole at the rear of the device until the status light flashes green. I think I've spotted what may have been wrong.

5 mins or so after the factory reset, I'm hopeful you'll find there's no longer an issue.

WiFi calling uses the home Internet connection (i.e. via the router) not a phone mast!

@RobPN OK - Senior moment - the OP must then have a mobile service that allows it, I did mean to ask earlier who their mobile provider was.

Wow! Its just suddenly started working!!! Ive done nothing (not factory reset or anything since last night).

How very strange! I will never understand how wifi/internet connections work. Its black magic as far as I can see!

I suspect what Bob did may have caused the router to disconnect/reconnect to effect the changes...
