My wifi speed is SO slow!

Hi everyone,
New to Plusnet this month and I’ve got the ‘hub 1’ router.

My wifi speed is so bad that it keeps (pausing, loading, buffering) when watching any streaming service on my TV and isn’t strong enough to even let me update my apps on my TV. I’ve had to stop gaming completely as it’s literally unplayable due to the slow wifi!

My router is placed in an open space on the window sill right next to the master socket it’s plugged into!

Can anyone recommend anything? 😩😩

How about you start with the results of entering your phone number in the BTW DSL Checker to see what speeds you can expect, and show your current line speeds?

@lewisknowlden1- What product are you on? I find it strange that you have a Hub1, unless you have elected to use ADSL rather than FTTC or Full Fibre.

The result from the link @Mustrum provided is needed before we can offer any further help.

Just to be clear, are you talking about the WiFi being slow - or the broadband?

Do you have any devices connected to the hub by ethernet cable?

I have the hub 1 because I wasn’t able to get full fibre in my area. Also what is an ‘ADSL’ and ‘FTTC’?

Hi Paul, I think it’s my broadband connection, it’s just plugged in from the ‘DSL’ on the router to the master socket on the wall. I’ve also reset my router several times but it doesn’t seem to make a difference

@lewisknowlden1- Even if you couldn't get Full Fibre, I would very surprised if Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC)isn't available.

'ADSL' is the original broadband infrastructure, where the BB signal is over copper cable all the way from your local exchange to you.

If you put your phone number into this link : https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL and post a screenshot - making sure your phone number is obscured - we may have a better idea.

@lewisknowlden1- If you have saved the screenshot (hopefully to a desktop/laptop), click the icon between the 'smiley' and 'camera' icons at the top of the reply window and follow the prompts.

OK - our posts crossed, but from that image, it appears you can get FTTC - unfortunately, because it is only half the page, some information is missing.

EDITED TO TO ADD:

However, looking at that half-picture, you appear to be a very long way away from your local street cabinet, so although FTTC would improve your performance, it would not be a massive rise in performance, but still better than your current product. If you did decide to upgrade (if PN agreed, and there is no reason why they shouldn't) do not go for the 'Fibre Extra' product, but ask for the basic 'Fibre' one.

I've just tried running a test to see if there's any issues with your line itself and it seems to look like your router isn't connected. Have you disconnected the router at all or has it just gone completely down now?

Hi, my router just randomly went to an orange light with a red one flashing below so I turned it all off and restarted it and it’s all connected and working but still seems slow and is occasionally distorting the picture quality when watching something on a streaming service

@lewisknowlden1- If you are on ADSL, with the estimated maxima as on that screenshot you provided earlier, there is no way you are going to get a perfect streaming performance - the capabilities of the connection are just not up to it.

The only 'upgrade' that would sort this is an upgrade to Fibre To The cabinet (FTTC) from your current ADSL connection, but if I recall correctly, even that technology won't give you brilliant speeds. I think this has been discussed earlier in this topic?

It all depends on what the service predictions might be. FTTC (VDSL) could by much better than ADSL if the house is near the green cabinet ... though where the green cabinet is some distance away ... VDSL might not be much better than ADSL.

Whatever, this does not sound like slow "WiFi" issue ... but rather an issue with the broadband connection speed. There are some rural areas which do not have FTTC and remain on long coper circuits delivering slow ADSL services. Unless there is the option of a decent mobile (3/4/5G) borne internet service, it is what it is.

FTTC speed is moderate (seen much worse) but ADSL (fault free) should be quite adequate for video streaming.

We should suspect a fault here - @csmith94 's test did not say no fault found, just that the router was not in sync.

@lewisknowlden1- can you please post the stats from your router.

That depends on the TV and the streaming service app. I have an LG TV and when I had ADSL it couldn't manage to play iPlayer (YouTube worked fine). After investigating it became apparent that it didn't stream smoothly. It would buffer a 20-30 seconds of video, and then fetch the next chunk 10 seconds before the buffer emptied. Unfortunately it often took longer to fetch the next chunk over ADSL than it took to empty the buffer.
