Post-Openreach landline fixes, is it possible to further increase speed?

I've very recently had noise issues with the landline and Openreach to their credit have managed to confirm the fault and fix within a couple of days.

Prior to the fix I saw a steady drop from circa 23Mbps download to about 16, now we're back up at around 22Mbps pretty much constantly regardless of the time of day. This is a wired only connection.

Now I'm left wondering if the Sync speeds I'm seeing could actually be increased due to the new found strength in my connection. Is there a way to increase the Sync speed to conduct a 'stress test' on the line to see what its really capable of?

I'll add some help stats on here to get started, if I need to add anything else no problem.

Hi John,

Thanks for your response.

I've attached a screenshot with my phone number obscured below.

I'm just curious to see whether my now 'ideal' connection can help me with my working from home situation. I regularly access large engineering CAD files and having the best I can get out here in the sticks will really help.

The speed is determined by the automatic DLM in the street cabinet so you can’t manually ‘stress test’ your speed. From your router stats it looks like your DLM has been reset to the default download 6dB SNR. If your line will support faster speeds then over the coming days you will see the SNR drop and the speed increase automatically. If there are still issues then it will go the other way.
The data requested by @jab1 will tell us the estimated range of speeds that BT think your line will support.

Thanks for the help both!

I am aware yes but I can only see 24 month contracts for full fibre. I'm not in the position to commit to 24 months at this address so having the 12 month VDSL line seemed to be the best option at the time. I purchased it back in September 2022.

So the upshot is, wait and see what the local cabinet decides is best for the new connection?

You could always ring the COT and ask, they might have shorter contracts if you ask. It costs nothing to ask and this number is normally answered quite quickly. Otherwise yes, you have to wait and see but the ADSL checker suggests that it’s not going to get significantly better.

@MDEV As I said, you appear to be on the max possible speed for VDSL - your line must take a very circuitous route from the cab.

However, if you contact customer options as suggested, you may find they can offer you a 12 month contract on Full fibre.

Hi again,

Just wanted to ask one last question, my Max data rate is consistently hovering around 28Mbps, but my data rate is 1-1.5Mbps lower and hasn't budged in days. Is this normal? Would it be worthwhile for a reset somewhere?

Only asking as the Max data rate and data rate values for upload are matched exactly.

Thanks for your help guys! 🙂

So the Hub 2 Sync rate on the Tech Log has now increased to 28.8Mbps (upload still same at 1.2Mbps ish) but the Max data rate has stayed the same as before... 27.977Mbps...

How can that be? 😅

I'm now achieving a reliable 25.4Mbps download which is significantly better than before.

It is not a real achievable speed but a value displayed by the modem as a theoretical max speed based on some calculation using the line stats. Usually it is higher than the actual sync speed but it can get it wrong sometimes and show a value below the sync speed. Noting to worry about, just looks a bit strange.🤔
