How do you change the IP address on a technicolor gateway?

Hi, I hope someone can help! I need to change the IP address on my router (technicolor gateway) to avoid conflicting with my work network via VPN. I have read some of the posts about this and can't make head nor tail of what I am actually supposed to do. Can anyone give an idiot proof answer to this?!

Erm, no I don't think so.... I'm talking about the IP address I type into the address bar in my search engine to access the router.

That sounds like the internal LAN IP address to me. Which (from memory) would be 192.168.1.254 by default.

It's not just a case of changing the IP address of the router, you will need to change the sub-net it's running on. I'm guessing from what you've said that 192.168.1.* is used by the work network. You'll need to pick a sub-net that isn't used by that, so your first point must be to find out what sub-nets are created by the VPN - there could be more than one.
On the router you'll have to change the sub-net, the router's IP and the IP's given out by the DHCP. (Also it's possible if you've allocated a specific IP to your PC instead of letting it get it from the router you'll have to change the IP of the PC).

Yes the work network uses 192.168.1
I don't know what subnet is used by the VPN but all the IP addresses I can see associated with it begin 192.168.1
The VPN connects to a specific server IP address and is given an IP address beginning 192.168.1
Still no clue where to start I'm afraid!

liz,
Go to Home > Home Network > Interfaces > LocalNetwork
and then hit configure and scroll down to
192.168.1.254/24 and hit edit and change to 192.168.2.254/24
and then also edit
LAN_custom 192.168.1.30 - 192.168.1.253 192.168.1.254 and swap the .1. to .2.
Hit save and reboot router and pc and that should resolve the vpn issue

Hi Taras, I tried to do this but am now locked out of my router and have no internet access
I did the first step you suggested but there was no LAN_custom field. I've rebooted the router but can't get any access or internet. Any suggestions?!

Yes (mac), also tried to connect to router via cable rather than wireless. No go

Oh dear
Failing all else try a hard reset of the router which will set it back to defaults
However you will then probably need to enter your Plusnet login details manually

I'm afraid that was the consequence of adjusting one thing without adjusting the other. The router hands out a pool of IP addresses to the devices you connect to it by a process known as DHCP. If you change the router IP address to 192.168.2.254 and leave the the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 then the pool of IP address must match and be somewhere in the range 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.253 . I don't have a Technicolor router myself so cannot tell you exactly where to find the setting you need. Is there any mention of DHCP in the settings?

When you said you were locked out of the router after making the changes were you trying to access it using 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.2.154? (it should have been the latter).

@ReedRichards sorry (due to lack of reading up on subnet masks) i didn't release the the subnet mask needed changing when you go from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.2.254
the dhcp pool settings are like this .
