It's free to watch this weekend 25-27 Oct on the Sky platform (and probably FreeSat too if you manually add it) if anyone is interested in seeing what it is like.
The free hours are:
Friday – 6pm – 4am
Saturday – 11.30am – 4am
Sunday – 11.30am – 6am

I don't believe you can.
On my Humax Foxsat-HDR I can switch to 'non-freesat mode' and scan all available channels from the satellite my dish is aimed at but in 'Freesat mode' I am restricted to the Freesat channels.

The YouView part of this announcement is only part that is remotely interesting to me. Do we have any idea what the likely costs will be?

I can already get BT Sport free as part of my Virgin tv package, a lot of people are going to be disappointed after all the hype made about BT Sport
Shame it's also locked down to customers with a Sky viewing card, be more of an announcement if smart TV's & pvr's could get connected to BT Sport via Plusnet.

Two different things all together really. I've no particular interest in sport so I would have missed the tiny mention of You View in the BT Sport announcement.

Well that explains why you thought it appropriate to restrict us to one topic! I suggest you go to http://www.youview.com/ and find out what it's about!
The range of content on BT Sport looks pretty pathetic and you can only get it from Plusnet if you have a Sky receiver. Well sorry, if you have to have Sky doesn't that somewhat negate the point of BT Sport? That's what make that announcement a non-event.

Thank you for the link - the bit which could have interested me is the extra premium channels which BT are offering but it is only available to fibre customers which I have no chance whatsoever of getting with moving house

Are you sure it's pnly fibre customers?
A few years back I had BTVision, and YouView is the same product just rebranded, and I didn't/don't have fibre, you just needed a minimum 3meg connection to stream the add-on channels.
You also don't need fibre for YouView from TalkTalk.
The YouView that talktalk offer is actually very good, the main problem was the box they supplied, the software was very buggy, and it could lag somewhat, although BT use Humax boxes and Talktalk use Huawei, which says it all!
I will defo be subscribing to YouView though.

Watched some of the free stuff on BT Sport over the weekend -there was more available thru the Sky dish than on Freeview,which only had the one channel - the only reason I might consider spending my hard earned pennies by adding it thru PN is for the English Rugby Union Premiership thru the winter( -altho' I did watch some World Series baseball on ESPN!)

BT do sell YouView for ADSL lines too: http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/tv/packages (First Option)
BT's pricing is very confusing. TV Essential + Unlimited Broadband is on offer and says £5 for 6 months (not entirely clear if that is per month for the total cost for 6 months). But if you hover over that £5, it says "Free for 6 months".
Anyone able to figure out how much YouView actually costs above the Unlimited Broadband option? It look like £5 but again it is not clear...
