My latest bill shows a 60p three minute call to a London number at 07.15 on 5th August. As we are an elderly couple who not make landline calls and haven't done so for some years we have no reason to make calls at 07.15 in the morning. On checking the number online it appears to be a company dealing with French visas. I suspect if I raise a query I'll be told the call must have been made or do such situations occur and can I get a refund?

This is not uncommon in the presence of a line fault.

Using your land line phone dial 17070 and check (a) the reported number is your number (b) select option 2 to check that there is no noise on the line

Using some other phone service, call your number and confirm that the telephone rings

Together these tests confirm that your circuit / number are connected to your house, not someone else’s.

If there is noise on the line report a phone fault - this could be an indication that your line and another line are touching, giving rise to phantom calls on your line.
